i know it's not properly a discussion topic, but i thought considering the success of the "6-7 cdr history of garage" thread a month or two ago people could use this.

i've ripped the sun city 2000 ad tape pack - 8 tapes, recorded nye2000 to ogg vorbis 160KB/s VBR, which will play on pretty much any modern media player and is a lot more free than mp3, which is to say completely.

use bittorrent to dl them. it's free too. get it at http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/ and feed it this:
http://dizzee.csem.duke.edu/~cooper/sun_city_2000_ad.torrent
i must caution you that the set is 554MB, though.

tapes:
mikee b
norris "da boss" windross
mike "ruff cut" lloyd
ramsey
masterstepz
frances james
pied piper
junior b

mcs: creed, charlie brown, romeo, psg, rankin, blakey, sparks, kofie b, melody, combo

I downloaded the whole thing and can't get them to work in iTunes... is there a way to convert them?

you can dump them out to .wavs and then re-mp3 them but that's ugly, don't do that, they'll have artifacts and sound like ass and people will think they're my fault; i already had to butcher these a bit to take out the tape hiss.

http://www.vorbis.com/software.psp?pid=4 might have some software you can use. if the quicktime components work i expect they'll play in itunes.

Awesome, thanks. I downloaded a program called "Audion" which handles them.

Listening to them from today's perspective is weird, it's like classic house or something.

what strikes me most is that the mcs are SO FUCKING BAD compared to today. most of them just have a couple of catchphrases they repeat and then a few verses. there's a part in one set where romeo from so solid is doing his verse from "oh no" and sounds like he doesn't even know where the beat is.

It's not like MC's back then were so far behind in the evolutionary scale - Jungle MC's were far better even in the mid-90's. But what's odd is how peripheral these crap MC's are to the music, it's like they're barely making an effort to speak for large sections of it. Maybe they're just all fucked up on something because it's New Years.

These look really good, I can't check at the moment because I'm at work, but is it still being seeded? I'm going to try and start when I get home.

yeah, i'll seed these for quite a while (at least another week or so). high-speed university connection, too.

Excellent, you are a true gent!

BTW have you tried the experimental bittorrent client at http://bt.degreez.net?

yeah, i've looked at shad0w's, and a lot of people i know are using it, but i've not felt the need, and i've already got nice rpm packages of the official client so i just stick with that, generally. it's probably a better bet if you're with windows since you just need a binary anyway.
