This is a genre I rarely crave, but do find myself needing to force a smile upon my face. I don't have any though. What's the one they use on the Blode Adventures?

Best of genre - go!

Being scottish my tastes in happy hardcore shade towards the dutch party gabber sound, but...

Force and Styles - "Heart of gold"
Scott Brown and Rab S - "Now is the time"
Brisk - "Airhead" (greatest happy hardcore tune ever)
DJ Technotrance - "YRS Stomp"
Chill FM - "Strobelight"
Dye Witness - "Only if I had one more

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 06:22 (twenty years ago) link

And, destroy:

Anything Sharkey did after '96
Billy Bunter et al - 'trancecore' abomination...
Dutch party gabber records with 80s vocals sped up over the top
The Sandman - "Can can party" - happy hardcore version of the can can music. No. Just no. Possibly the most irritating record ever.
DJ Sy - great dj, shit producer.

Big up the 1994/1995 norf lundun Dream FM massive.

I just dug out an ancient tape of the above pirate station and found "Rushin' On Pink Champagne". It's like I'm 14 years old all over again and Britpop hasn't yet been invented.

This tape is great, by the way; all manner of stoned 16 year olds and single mothers phoning in for 'big ups'. This, of course, was a time when mobile phones were a novelty.

I'm just waiting for the other side, which I think has Extreme doing his pigeon impression on it if I remember correctly.

OH YES - just found a site with archive recording of Dream FM's Swiflee and Fiaz. I swear, if my tape has the 'pigeon' thing on it, I'll upload it somewhere and share.

I've just been revisiting to some of the mid-nineties happy hardcore compilations that I used to listen to as a prepubescent ned and I'm resurrecting this thread because I felt the need to mention how fucking awesome Seb's Rainbow Island (sharkey mix) is.

It's just some woman singing nondescript lyrics over a cheesy little chord progression...probably taken from the computer game. But there's something about the juxtaposition of the slightly detached or emotionless quality of the vocal, (particularly at the "love never dies" bit) with the syrupy melodrama of the lyrics and synths that strikes me as fantastically poignant and subtle. Maybe it's just the effect of nostalgia, but I could listen to this all day. It's on the second CD of the 1996 Bonkers compilation.

Is there anyone else in Scotland who listens to Clyde One on a Saturday evening for "The GB Experience?" A few hours of new and classic happy hardcore and frivolous trance presented by George Bowie, complete with "menchies" for pals to whom requests are dedicated?

Hearing this at half past seven this evening made my weekend:

Maybe a bit early to be classed as HH, but whatever, it's massive.

I've been trying to track down the Happy Hardcore versions of "Rave" classics. Here's an example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?t=264&v=Zhemc9uOMck

It samples Bizarre Inc.'s "Playing With Knives". The flipside of this samples Congress' "40 Miles". He also has one that remixes Manix's "Feel Real Good".

I remember there was a Happy Hardcore version of "Raise Me" by Bizarre, Inc., but I don't know what it's called. I would love to find out, though. I also wish there was a happy hardcore version of "Your Love" by The Prodigy. The album version is just a little too thin when pitched up for Happy Hardcore.

Anyway, if anyone has any leads, let me know!

I think the best Happy Hardcore is the very early stuff, when it wasn't clearly distinguishable from 'Hardcore':

Anyone know of any other proto-Happy Hardcore worth checking out?

So, to answer my own question, posed earlier in this thread: A bunch of Happy Hardcore producers put out no-name singles that remixed rave tunes as happy hardcore. So Slipmatt had the SMD series, Wishdokta had Naughty Naughty, Red Alert and Mike Slammer had the '?' series, Sy and Unknown had the 'DJs Unknown' series, DJ Pooch had the '4 the Floor' series, and there were many more.

Here's a great list of happy hardcore records from that era.
