i still quite like 'too young to die' and 'when you gonna learn' (probably trite to say but would get more love if it WAS Stevie Wonder and the similarity - not just in voice but in the whole styling of the track - is quite tangible) and 'supersonic' had an almost basement jaxxy vibe (ironing etc.) - also i never cared for 'virtual insanity' initially and i hated all the singles off their last album but have found them creeping into my head more than they were ever supposed to only recently, what the hell?

go and see Lucas Belvaux' Trilogy: One if you want fat basslines. it's a great score; just two double basses thrumming away throughout the entire film.

i think the hate for the band comes more from Jay K's image rather than his voice (weedier Stevie Wonder not THAT bad a thing cos he does do it pretty dam well) or the music (bog standard jazz funk production, the band are actually very good if staid musicians). he should not have persisted with the stupid hats or the long greasy hair for so long perhaps...some points salvaged back for amusing rows with Denise Van Outen tho.

Travelling Without Moving and The Return of the Space Cowboy are both good albums, I enjoy 'em.

Also, Jamiroquai's website is referred to as "Jay Kay's Official Web Site", so He is Jamiroquai and no one else at this point, it seems.

I went back and listened some of their old stuff and found a lot of the songs I remember liking seem a lot more like riffs and less like songs ("You Are My Love," "Alright"), but a lot of the stuff on Synkronized (or whatever) seems really good right now. "Planet Home" is still amazing, especially with those synthy-air-raid-sireny washes kick in again towards the end after the breakdown. "Butterfly," "Canned Heat," and "Supersonic" also are damned good.

trudat. but that was not a very typical jamiroquai track. just about the rest were lame funk jams.

also:
virtual insanity: good melody, shame about the lyrics.
one or two songs on the debut had a swampy funk basement quality to them, but apart from that: SHITE!

jamiroquai make great poppy soul-jazz-funk records. fuck the rock mainstream critic evaluation that jay kay just sounds like stevie wonder, go and listen to glenn lewis to see what a stevie xerox singer really sounds like. if you dont like (modern?) soul-jazz-funk, then chances are you wont like jamiroqai. cos most people who like that sort of music, do like him.
