i'm pretty sure that the wedding present's "seamonsters" is going to own this, but are there any others that record stores are notorious for not being able to correctly figure out which is the title and which is the band name?

rainman (rainman), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i still don't know whether "megnolia electric co." is a self-titled debut album or a songs: ohia album. i can't file it on my own shelves until i find out.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

spellcheck: "magnolia."

also: negativland's "u2" to thread.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

he changed the name of his thing to magnolia electric co. so it would be filed under M.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

did he tell his label? 'cause i believe it came with a sticker on the shrinkwrap saying something like, "this is the new songs:ohia album."

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure this counts, but I frequently find albums by Killing Time, Killer Joe and Killing Heidi in the Killing Joke sections.

Modern Lovers/Modern Talking/Talking Heads

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post to cuz -- the sticker is there so that people will buy so that folk know its the same guy playing name change games akin to Mr. Bonnie Palace Oldham.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

XPOST!!!!!!!!!!!

he changed the name of his thing to magnolia electric co. so it would be filed under M.

he (and david pajo) should change his name to will oldham already.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That album called "Madonna" of course is one. The band Catherine Wheel always pops up in the "W"s, if that counts. Um.....r....

John 2, Saturday, 13 December 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!

to me, it should go at the very beginning of the alphabet,
but sometimes when i'm filing cds away someone's put it under c, apparently for "chk chk chk"

Zach Scott (feedback), Saturday, 13 December 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

pitchfork platitudinally sticks !!! under E for "exclamation points" but they are second in my alpha scheme (just after ? and the mysterians)

i have probs with james white's output - all under c for now to make it EZ, cos it covers contortions and chance

and any IDM lp's go under the most familiar moniker (i.e. chaos ad files under s)

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i.e. as e.g. obv

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Local used stores have the terrible habit of filing Steely Dan under D.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

People are stupid.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember where this was but I remember being baffled by a listing for 'Duul 2, Amon' at one point

Fug (Ferg), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Heidi > all other "Killing" bands

jole, Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

always, always always - Jethro Tull under T for Tull.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 December 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to find Steeleye Span in the Steely Dan section all the time.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Saturday, 13 December 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been able to ascertain where "Jon Spencer Blues Explosion" should go. Perversely, on my own shelves, I file it under "B."

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 13 December 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaymc works in Bizarro World Record Store.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 13 December 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just talking about in my house!

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 13 December 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Bettie Serveert gets filed under "S" quite a bit.

rainman (rainman), Saturday, 13 December 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark-Almond / Marc Almond

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 13 December 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

S Club x

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 13 December 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I once saw Friends of Dean Martinez filed under "M" and "D". Also, Amon Tobin is always misfiled.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

REM by Green

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Aereogramme are always put in the 'metal' sections of shops. Morons.

Also, I'm pretty sure The Shape Of Punk To Come by Refused is doomed to a life of misfiledom...

Stupid (Stupid), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I never know whether to look for St. Etienne in St or Sa(int).

ben welsh (benwelsh), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Jole....Sorry about that. I guess I just have a deep-seated resentment towards Killing Heidi in that they are constantly misfiled in the Killing Joke bins....perpetually prompting this response: "Oooh...what's this, I haven't seen this albu..d'oh! it's fucking Killing Heidi again!!!!"

I have never actually heard the Australian band in question (isn't that right? Aren't they Australian?) It should also be noted that I am an overzealous Killing Joke fan, prone to blanket generalizations about virtually all other music....not to be taken entirely seriously (tho' some often mistake my needlessly strenuous zeal for humorlessness). Apologies to you and the folks in Killing Heidi.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sir Folk at the place I most often patronize actually has all palace/will oldham/bonnie prince billy recordings under "oldham"

adam michel (adam michel), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, Someone spurred just spurred a dark drunken fire in me. I work in a record shop and the powers that be file St. Etienne in jazz? Huh? Is that right?
I'm having a harder time every day tring to justify Jazz from Not Jazz and Nu-jazz and new lounge. Kruder and Dorfmeister will now sit alongside of Lawrence Welk. Chill house will be in easy listening next as soon as the age group hits 40+.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 13 December 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to get the clerk to find The Streets for me when it came out, it was in the electronica section.

David Beckh0u5e (Dave Beckh0u5e), Sunday, 14 December 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i have probs with james white's output - all under c for now to make it EZ, cos it covers contortions and chance

It doesn't cover James White & the Blacks, though. (I file that under Contortions, anyway)

I've seen Ciccone Youth under "Y" and 23 Skidoo under "G" (for the album The Gospel Comes...). Admittedly these aren't albums that are "always" misfiled, but they've always struck me as the stupidest misfilings I've seen.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, regarding your own collections...
I file Os Mutantes/Mutantes under "M". But I am strangely compelled to file Le Tigre under "L". But then again, "Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares" goes under "M" (why are they using French for a Bulgarian album, anyway?). It makes sense to me, but I'm not sure I could explain it.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
albums by "Fair, Lilith" under "F"

babyalive (babyalive), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I get pissed when they throw the Inside Out record in the Rage Against The Machine section like it was just some warm-up band.
