Is Bjork a sickness? --- (C or D if you wish)

I just find true hard-core Bjork fans to be quite strange. They all have somehow come to the conclusion that Bjork is the inventor of all things creative, from clothing to break beat ryhthems to maybe even sliced bread.

She's talented, fine. Agreed. But, fuck...whats the deal? I personally find her music to be quite random and unpleasant.

However, for every 1 horribly obnoxious Bjork fanboy/girl there are 10 ridiculously obnoxious Mike Patton fanboy/girls.

I once went to the dimly-lit apartment of a boy in my film class who looked just like young but big-headed version of robert smith or so, who had a fucking shrine - and i mean SHRINE - to bjork set up in the main room. There were all these bjork-as-duck (or whatever she was at that year's oscars) pics like in a circle, and candles, and it was just WEIRD. and aside from her all he listened to was like nick cave and neutral milk hotel; he also had black painted fingernails and had an entire phone conversation in front of me in which he kept saying "but i want to talk about me..ME." i dont even want to get started on his student films..

Why *did* you go to that peculiar fellow's apartment in the first place, Vic?

Sean (Sean), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:43 (twenty years ago) link

Oh Sean, tsk tsk. It was because someone in our class had been kind enough to invite him to one of our year-end parties, and I was the nice/naive one who ventured to go get him from his place and accompany him to the party...no one else wanted to since we all thought he eternally lived in darkness (and it was very dimly lit, really. He had also created his own black wallpaper all over the living room...before we could leave I had to watch one of his films from the year before, however, which involved this incessantly shaky camera following indie pierced girl down the street as atonal music blares. Seventeen minutes pass... The end.). The good thing out of all this is I got to have some saki there..hey getting your pre-party drink on is important regardless, right?

It's not what you're thinking; I'm ain't attracted to Robert Smithish people. Or Bjork-fans!!!!

ke[hm, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

Now, nobody get me wrong -- I *love* Bjork. Love her. Have almost all her stuff, save for a few stray singles. I even have that live box. But if you came into my apartment, this would not be immediately apparent. It's all about that fine line between clever and stupid.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:15 (twenty years ago) link

Did anyone see that video footage of when she when absolutely ballasticon on a TV reporter and started trying to beat the shit out of (him? her?). And then her handlers physically had to haul her ass onto the tour bus?

Leee Trevino (Leee), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:08 (twenty years ago) link

I love Bjork but I don't think she's God. Tho I did go through a brief obsession phase when I first discovered how much I liked her music. It wore off pretty fast.

I know a Mike Patton fangirl... she was going on and on about how creative he is and how talented and blah blah. I'd never met one before!

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 02:08 (twenty years ago) link

The Bjork cult definitely tops my list of least favorite cults, at least for now. I've certainly had many experiences with particular extremist fans of hers who consistently dub her the, "inventor of all things creative, from clothing to break beat ryhthems to maybe even sliced bread," as well as bring her up in discussions of any other musical artist, and nearly every other topic which might come up to which she has no connection whatsoever. Plus they booed will oldham when he opened for her at the hollywood bowl because he, "was really, like, not energetic at all. He was sooo boring, not like Bjork at all."

J. Weiss (jweiss), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:25 (twenty years ago) link

I like Bjork, though I never got around to getting Vespertine.

Does she have Ani diFranco type fans? The only people I know personally who love Bjork are jazz musicians.

I went pretty nuts for Homogenic when it came out. I used to play it extremely loudly and bother my neighbors. Listening to it now, I'm not quite sure what I loved about so much at the time.

i dislike tori.
i did not boo will oldham, i love him, but i think playing solo with the autoharp was sort of asking for it. he should have brought his excellent band.

Kevin Erickson, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 08:42 (twenty years ago) link

Ye-es, I have been through this sickness and came out the other end relatively unscathed. I think partly the reason why I liked her so much is that everybody else I knew at the time fucking hated her. So that lasted a few years, and I have almost everything she's done. Time was I'd have rushed out to buy all these DVDs and extra bits of tat she's putting out on the day of their release, but I simply can't be arsed now.

In fact, she's started to piss me off a bit. Vespertine was a bit cack, and she was disappointing the last time I saw her in concert. I want her to make music that's for loudspeakers, not headphones, but from what I've heard of the next LP she's going the other way. Ah well.

PS Hardcore Tori fans are infinitely more crackers.

Her name sure as hell sounds like someone being sick.

I saw that footage of her smacking shit out of that journo that was pestering her, and she immediately shot up in my estimation.

A few years later, when Princess Di had her crash, I found myself wondering whether she'd still be alive if, very early in her public life, she had done what Bjork did...

Oh dear, that'd be me. Tori fans kick ass in the rabid obsessive stakes vs Bjork fans, though.

Wasn't Peaches booed when she opened for Bjork once as well? That's quite strange, any gig with a combination of Bjork, Will Oldham and Peaches would be nigh-on perfect for me.

Bjork voted 'most eccentric'

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Icelandic singer Bjork, who famously dressed up as a swan at the 2001 Academy Awards, has been voted the world's most eccentric celebrity in a recent British magazine poll.

The 40-year-old, who also had a run-in with a reporter in Bangkok 10 years ago, beat out former world boxing champion Chris Eubank and goalkeeper-turned-commentator David Icke, who came second and third respectively.

Bernie Herlihy, editor of the BBC's "Homes and Antiques" magazine which held the poll, said readers had crowned Bjork the most bizarre star thanks to "her quirky dress sense and very individual type of music.

"She's known by the public for pretty crazy things like having an altercation with a journalist," she added.

Former "Doctor Who" actor Tom Baker was ranked fourth while the reality television star and former rocker Ozzy Osbourne came fifth. Nearly 6,000 people voted in the poll.

"I thought someone like David Icke might (come) top actually," Herlihy said of the man who proclaimed himself the "son of God" during a television interview in 1991.

The top 10 also includes John McCririck, Patrick Moore, Vivienne Westwood, Jimmy Savile and Uri Geller.

three years pass...

Inside an article on Iceland by Michael Lewis, this:

Because Iceland is really just one big family, it’s simply annoying to go around asking Icelanders if they’ve met Björk. Of course they’ve met Björk; who hasn’t met Björk? Who, for that matter, didn’t know Björk when she was two? “Yes, I know Björk,” a professor of finance at the University of Iceland says in reply to my question, in a weary tone. “She can’t sing, and I know her mother from childhood, and they were both crazy. That she is so well known outside of Iceland tells me more about the world than it does about Björk.”

This matches with the experience I had when I was at UCLA -- took a class in Norse sagas from an American professor there who regularly went to Iceland for research, this was in 1990 or so. I said to him at one point, "There's this band I like from Iceland called the Sugarcubes," to which he responded, "Oh yeah, I know them all. Great folks."

Wow! I love that! I don't know if that's just how bjork acts or that just how icelanders roll but a great deal of her magnetism is how strange and unique her personality is, and it's not a fabricated quirkyness like most popstars, she's naturally interesting.

I have the sickness.

Yeah I mean I think on balance I like Bjork and her oeuvre and her persona, it's just that Brand Bjork has started to get a little overbloated with all these pompous art retrospectives and whatnot.
