All of these covers scream "prog" to me, even if its not the case at all.

fletrejet, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny, I thought about posting that Swans cover too,....but as enigmatic as the image is, it does say SWANS in big, block capital letters....so obviously, merry fairytale pop jingles do not await the listener.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's essentially a very "prog" thing to do --- to have enigmatic album covers.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex... to be honest, I thought White Light contained it's fair shair of fairytale pop songs (with jingling bell sounds). Merry... maybe not.

BUT, consider the fact that if you didn't know who Swans were, it's quite a nice name for a very elegant animal.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

How do album covers tell you about the music in the first place?

Aja (aja), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex... to be honest, I thought White Light contained it's fair shair of fairytale pop songs (with jingling bell sounds). Merry... maybe not.

True, there's a bunch jingling bells right before "Love of Life,"...sort've conjuring the image of a slowly dying, staggering reindeer finally dropping to the floor.

BUT, consider the fact that if you didn't know who Swans were, it's quite a nice name for a very elegant animal.

Haha...true again.

I guess there are some sheep bleets in the music though..

What kind of music is this:

? that's how.

deth, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that kind of music.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How do album covers tell you about the music in the first place?

Here's an example of an album cover telling you exactly what your need to know. I.E. What you see is what you get:

I guess this was kind of effective.

>How do album covers tell you about the music in the first place?

I have a better example:

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Joy Division?

Aja (aja), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, apart from the title and band logo, I think the cover of Reign in Blood is a good deal less stereotypical than your average metal album. While the imagery is still preoccupied with bloodshed and carnage, it's a good deal more stylized and, well, thought-provoking than your average cover by Manowar or Helix.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think very many of the examples are arbitrary.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Derek: Is it going to say anything here, or here along the spine?
David: It's not going to say anything?
Ian: No, it's not going to say anything.
Nigel: It's going to be like this, all black...
Ian: No, it's going to be that simple, beautiful, classic!

may pang (maypang), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this Primus' Brown Album? Because if it is, it has a cardboard slipcase and a booklet...

I think this shows you exactly what you get.

I beg to differ on the Ride one up top. A swooshing expanse of blue ocean? Thats got Ride guitar sound written all over it!

Or maybe thats just me.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, what the fuck is that one with the abstract art upthread?

Which one do you mean? Music for Pleasure by the Damned is this one (produced by Pink Floyd's Nick Mason...the prog connection continues):

May as well belabor the abstract art point:

do the abstract art covers indicate music inside that tries to be artsy?

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex: it was that one alright. Never would imagine it was a punk album cover (let alone being produced by a Pink Floyd member...)

All ~scape releases, for example...

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre900/e947/e94736cintm.jpg http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre000/e071/e07130y4y3t.jpg http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf400/f488/f48829abwgi.jpg

Despite the hyper-cool covers, some of these records contain very warm and emotional music. The minimalist Autechre cover is spot on, I think, because their music is as abstract and boring as the cover suggests.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)
