BBC 1Xtra uncovers a prolific black rock and punk scene

Black music has been strategically re-titled and packaged by the music industry as 'urban'. Black artists are restrained by record companies within the confines of Hip Hop, RnB and Garage. It's 2003; was Jimi Hendrix really the last great Black rock icon we'll have?

But then Black kids only do Hip Hop, right? Wrong! This documentary reports from New York City to uncover a prolific Black Rock and Afro Punk scene that's really blowing up.

Are Hip Hop fans getting bored with urban music? A group of Hip Hop producers in downtown New York say these days Hip Hop is more about the money than good music and most of them would rather buy a Linkin Park album or listen to Coldplay.

Bands, journos and record execs thrash out whether it has the potential to shake up the music world and force an end to the industry's pigeon-holing that some say goes as far as racism.

If black people don't listen to rock music, is that racism on the part of the music industry or from hip hop people who say rock is not black music and only hip hop/rnb is true to their culture? That seems to be the focus of the interview.

I think this is just a ploy by 1xtra to display obviously their (already quite considerable) diversity. There's always these sorts of questions as well on their website but they still continue to play gangsta rap and grime!
