you can't fade me (by ice cube)

"drop a old skool beat..."

this song is repellent in many ways, yet i find myself rooting for ice cube throughout. it helps that he's funny. i like the charming exchange he has with the "neighbourhood hussy" Carla about her pregnancy.

"I looked down she was fat in the front... / ... she said 'yeah but the damage is done...the lucky man is you' / i dropped my brew (smash) / not a baby by you? the neighbourhood hussy / are you sure it's mine.../...what i need to do is kick the bitch in the tummy."

yikes! what's funny about the song is that Ice Cube is completely helpless for most of it. His spirit is broken: "What i'ma do? / I don't have a clue? / i'm gettin faded... / ...it's supposed to be mine so they laughin at me / you know ice cube can't be havin' that"

later, the baby emerges - and it's clearly his next door neighbour's. Phew! despite (or perhaps because) cube displayed some vulnerability earlier in the song, he tries hard to re-assert his masculinity.

"You can't fade me! /i don't fall for the okey doke / and before i fall for the okey doke / i let the pistol smoke!"

The change in tone is amusing, particularly as he needed a stroke of luck to give him his "lucky escape". despite cube emerging victorious, his anger comes across as strangely impotent for most of the song.

the backing track is rather funky also. i say this song is a deliciously amoral stroke of genius, what say you?

I don't know, the "kick in the tummy" part always struck to me as too much. It's kinda hard to be objective after that...

"Then I thought deep about giving up the money
What I need to do is KICK THE BITCH IN THE TUMMY"

Yeah, I was hooked on this track this summer. It's so OTT it's hard to take it seriously. I just find it hilarious. It cracks me up everytime. Have you heard "Amerikkas most wanted"? It's a great album

tuomas -

he may well have crossed a line or two with that lyric, but his reason for not "kicking the bitch in the tummy" makes me laugh with its sheer callousness: "nah but then i'd really get faded / cos that's murder 1 cos it's pre-meditated!". jesus! indefensible, i suppose, but i can enjoy the song without appreciating the sentiments...

I guess kicking a pregnant women in the tummy is one of the few taboos which you can't easily break. I once saw a movie where this was done, and everyone in the audience, even the hardcore horror fans, were quite distraught.

"Have you heard "Amerikkas most wanted"?"

Yes, and I do like it quite a lot. There's a great stretch from tracks 5 to 10, starting with "you can't fade me". he's got a ferocious delivery.
