let's say it loud: funk is the worst musical genre ever invented, a big old stain on Brown's CV and the cause of at least four decades of grinding misery. This, I will allow, is less a matter of such trailblazing proto-funk Brown pieces as Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Sex Machine and I Got the Feelin', as the ongoing nightmare of chronic indulgence and musical slop they undoubtedly spawned. If you doubt this, listen to the supposed high points of the genre: anything by the likes of Tower of Power, pre-disco Kool and the Gang, Cameo before they discovered pop music, or the woeful Ohio Players. And before anyone mentions the peak-period work of George Clinton, I say only this: hats off for the UFO, onstage fancy dress and occasional pearling tune, but did everything have to be so long? (I have a friend who saw Funkadelic in Manchester in 1975 - a six-hour performance, he says, that amounted to an experiment involving the limits of human endurance.)- John Harris

x-post
Geir's got a friend or too. Wow. Harris lumps too much stuff together. I found some of a Funkadelic show a bit wearying way back when, but it wasn't the funk portions of the gig, but the rock ones(I know, shame on me, but all of the guitar solos were not of Maggot Brain brilliance).
"Woeful Ohio Players" -- I can't believe this guy hates their hits.

Geir's got a friend
hah, wasn't Harris the one who loved Britpop?

i believe harris was also lambasted on this screens of late for using a morrissey interview to complain about acts not indulging in the furious genre-blending of 'Damon Albarn's Gorillaz'
― thomp, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)
Just for a moment, my mind was filled with the image of a bass player dressed up like a BacoFoil model of a partridge, standing at the top of one of the town's taller buildings and blitzing all in front of him with every miserable thwack of his thumb.
― hypo ilxa/hermes ban (kkvgz), Monday, 13 September 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)
thomp yeah i saw that, only thing is the john harris haters on the guardian threads wont read this thread as they probably hate funk too ... ;)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 13 September 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)
But don't you see how funk was solely responsible for economic devastation in Clarkesdale? Naughty funk.
― Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 13 September 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I was like wtf?? Hating on Ohio Players is bizarre enough, but if he actually believes that BS about Clarksdale, there aren't enough facepalms to signify my stupefaction.
― Overblown 80's Gated Snore (Dan Peterson), Monday, 13 September 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)
haha yeah that was a good bit too
Twenty-five years later, I saw decisive proof of funk's utter evil. On a trip to Clarksdale, Mississippi - one-time home of the blues, now home to a small blues industry - a friend and I were taken on a tour of a part of town that seemed to have been suddenly deserted in around 1975, leaving empty buildings and grass growing through the cracks in the road. Though I naively assumed this was probably down to the mechanisation of the cotton industry, our guide put us right: "Funk did this," he said (really, he did), claiming that, in killing the last traces of the blues, the nightmare genre had also done for his community.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 13 September 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know anything about clarksdale, mississippi, but it would seem John Harris doesn't either.

Do you want raw-sounding rare funk or more polished stuff like AWB, Gap Band, Tower of Power etc.?
― space phwoar (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
Ooh, also Rhino's Phat Trax series. A little deeper catalog stuff, and longer versions, than In Yo Face but both of those were go-to sets when I had a dj gig.

Find me some funk. Nasty funk.
Tuned in in the middle of that Nelson George directed Funk overview tv doc hosted by Questlove, on VH1. Some good stuff. I gotta find out when its on again so i can see it all.
