Need a jazz recommendation quickly

Sorry - no time to look through all of the jazz threads to find the right thing...

I need to buy a CD for an old-timey jazz/jass fan.. Louis Armstrong is prolly his favorite.. He's pretty adventurous, but not really into Miles Davis electronic jazz - and not really a Sun Ra or Monk guy, although a tame Sun Ra recording might be good, if you can recommend one.

He's 75 years (YOUNG!) and a bit of an afficionado - so I have to find something obscure or new...

I'm going to go out on a limb and give him a Rahsaan Roland Kirk CD - even though it's not obscure, I'm pretty sure he's never listened to Kirk or Sun Ra.

Any recommendataions? Especially new virtuosos ....

Thanks-

Ra's Jazz In Silhouette would be a good one... (but it's got nekked women on the cover...in case that would cause some problems)

These are all pretty great, but also accessible:
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Sun Ra - Greatest Hits (good for an introduction only)
Ornette Coleman - Shape of Jazz to Come
John Coltrane - Ballads or My Favorite Things

He doesn't like MONK??!!! For shame! Try these and I think he'll come around (nothing far out here):
Himself or Alone in San Francisco (stellar solo sets)
Monk's Music
Unique Thelonious Monk (all covers, probably a good intro)

How about James Carter's "Chasin' the Gypsy'" a new virtuoso's take on an old virtuoso.

If you want a GREAT trad album that no one has heard, get the Paulin Bros. record. You have to get it from Louisiana Music Factory though. Or get a Leroy Jones album, he's the best New Orleans trumpet player going right now along with Nicholas Payton (plays first trumpet for Harry Connick, you can get his cd's from the same place).

I'd probably be more inclined to seek stuff that jibed with what he already liked. How extensive is his collection? If he loves the classic group sound of Armstrong, there are many archival 20s and 30s discs around. I like this Gennett Rareties disc; it's pretty much a labor-of-love type of release that compiles a bunch of obscure 78s by the forgotten likes of the Black Birds of Paradise, the Triangle Harmony Boys, Frank Bunch and his Fuzzy Wuzzies, etc. None of these groups even come close to Armstrong's in quality, but it's a fun period piece, with good, extensive notes. It kind of gives you a sense of what a typical "territory" group sounded like (which can be distorted if all you ever hear is Armstrong).

There's also the "Jazz That the World Forgot" Vols. 1+2 on Yazoo

Don't know if it would be quite what he's after, but Reckless Nights & Turkish Twilights by Raymond Scott is some great stuff from the 1930's. Also any of the Beau Hunks recordings of his music are worth hearing too.

Howsabout the recent Impluse! reish of 'Ask Me Now' by Pee Wee Rusell, where the former Dixieland clarinet player forms a swingin' 'modern' pianoless jazz quartet and covers tunes by Monk, Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. I like hearing old timey jazzers playing more modern stuff (Basie covered an Albert Ayler tune on one of his late recs!)

Talking of Basie, that recent 4 disc set on Sony looks like a gd stocking stuffer for old school jazzbos

Baby Dodds Talking and Drum Solos would be a really cool gift for an early jazz aficianado.

Oh yeah ... great choice Scott!

Indeed. Although the 'country brass band' that's tacked on the indeed sucks, no matter how historical it is.

Thanks, everyone .. Some great suggestions for him.. some great suggestions for me. (I think I may be picking up that Baby Dodds CD toot sweet.) I love it when I end up buying myself a bunch of records when I'm really just looking for one for someone else.
