It's Mountain Goats Lurve. Why Resist?

....not even NME can.

Just got this review of our own Darnielle, via 4AD:

The Mountain Goats release a brand new single this week in the shape of
"Palmcorder Yajna". It's the first taste of the music that makes up the album
"We Shall All Be Healed" (which is out at the beginning of February), and it's
available on 7" and CD.

The NME made "Palmcorder Yajna" one of their singles of the week this week -
here's what they had to say :

The Mountain Goats
Palmcorder Yajna (4AD)

The frighteningly prolific Mountain Goats are to all intents and purposes just
one man, John Darnielle, and his boombox. Over the last 11 albums he’s
gradually grown out of bang-on-a-can lo-fi and into one of the most quietly
skilful songwriters of the decade so far. A haunted, lyrical acoustic number
steeped deep in cobwebbed American gothic, “Palmcorder Yajna” finds Darnielle
living out some vivid waking dream, smoking tabs and sharing jokes with the
freaks, junkies and malcontents that roam through his quavering narrative. Yet
there's an eerie cheer to proceedings. Those distant chimes ? It's not
Santa's sleigh. It's the rusted bell of the Grim Reaper, and the Mountain
Goats welcome its every toll with another whisky.

Dare I ask if NME has finally learned the meaning of taste? Not bloody likely. Still, tis proof that ILX is conquering the world, slowly but surely.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or does 'Palmcorder Yajna' sound like 'Dead Men Don't Need Season Tickets' by Half Man Half Biscuit?

In any case, the new album is fantastic.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 12 December 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
I see that the Mountain Goats are playing right near me next week, and I was thinking of going just out of curiosity, but unfortunately I am working late that night.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I may end up at the Knitting Factory show on the 3rd. A couple of my friends are going, and likely they'll try to bring me along. $12 is a lot more money than I really want to spend on a show, though.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist, GO! he's a great performer

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yus, and tells funny stories and tales. And if you introduce yourself to him -- after the show, please! -- he'll be delighted, he likes meeting up with the ILX peoples.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

He's playing here Sunday I'm very excited! I've always spread the Mt. Goats gospel and I know of at least ten people who are coming to the show from out of town as a result. I've never seen him before, I can hardly wait

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 27 February 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

This reminds me of the review of the Mountain Goats in the Metro.

Apparently "Mr D4rn13113 could be the next Conor Oberst, if he tried". (That was a cracking issue of the Metro, up there with Heat on the web footed slebrity day).

Sarah (starry), Friday, 27 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the metro is only good for the page 1 animal stories

kephm, Friday, 27 February 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the esteemed J0hn last night and it was one hell of a show, despite the fact that he was ill.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The man's a trooper. :-) I think he mentioned to me once about how upset he was that he had to cancel a show somewhere a couple of years back because that was apparently the first time he had EVER done so -- and it was due to circumstances beyond his control.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sort of surprised "Home Against Garden Grove" wasn't the single, that song is just relentless. And the "AHHH-AHH-AHH" thing, wow.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
oh, finally. After hearing all about it in another thread, I downloaded the new 'Dance Music' from a recent Peel session out of sheer curiosity; honestly, because it was silly that I still hadn't listened to the music of the man whose posts about Steely Dan et al here always blow me away. So, I LOVED the song (esp. 'so this is what the volume knob's for'), and made haste to download a bunch more, all of which I quite enjoyed, esp. We Shall All Be Healed. I put it on CD w/ 'Dance Music' and listened to it for a week. Today, when I finally bought my legit copy to give J0hn his proper royalties, I gave the burnt copy to by best friend to hook him similarily.

what took me so long?
