I have to say, this is kind of a cool idea-qua-idea -- not sure I want this one, but I'd love to see someone else do something similar. (Who, I have no idea.)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 12 December 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

would only spend if it had a forward by Xgau

Vic (Vic), Friday, 12 December 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Virgin used to do a series of Music Yearbooks which were a good larf. Good luck to Pfork but ew, that title!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Music Yearbooks were quite U+K in my formative years 'cause they gave me a rough idea about what was happening in 1980's UK. Even went on ebay a few days ago to bid on one I didn't have.

Well, of course Freaky Trigger/ILx could always do one...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What would be the reason for wanting to buy that book?

If I want a compendium I'd rather it be along the lines of Da Capo.

don weiner, Friday, 12 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've occasionally thought of doing an FT printzine (or just doing a printzine) but it always seems like throwing good money after bad in the name of vanity and a book would be even more so. Pitchfork has a big enough fanbase to get away with it but I still wonder if they'll end up the poorer.

I am going to take advantage of my hopefully hugely increased webspace to do a Best Of FT for the 5th birthday though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

almost as dumb an idea as those continuum 33 1/3 books (JOKE, MATOS!!!!)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

like I'd care if you weren't joking!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Scary: I'm actually thinking about buying this, if only because having PF reviews in book form my actually lead me to read more than the 8-10 PF reviews I read online this year.

Chuck: Has VV ever considered doing something like this?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 December 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

there is also this

http://measuremag.com/

not sure if this is the first year it is going on, or if it has been done before. drawing on a wider breadth of sources then the, ahem, pf book.

marcg (marcg), Friday, 12 December 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i still find it kinda iffy that no one is getting paid for this.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

except, i assume, for ryan. and maybe the guy who designed it.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohhh well in that case maybe 'Pitchfork' will make money on it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

also, if you believe the water cooler rumors, the staff basically forced him to include the obie trice review.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

admittedly my source is a bit tainted.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

also if everyone/anyone would finally get of their asses (or on them) and submit something to my zine it might actually inspire to get off MY ass and print the damn thing. (with no money.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think guiltily about your zine article on an at least weekly basis!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i think guiltily about it every time i open my hotmail and see frank kogans contribution at the top from 18 months ago!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm definitely getting this, as I'm always picturing myself in 40 years time contemplating old almanachs in front of the chimney..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If any PF-ers are reading this, what all will be in the book?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haha if they reveal company secrets, they'll be excommunicated from the brotherhood of man like mullah omar.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

what's with the mcsweeney's ripoff design?

kevin erickson, Friday, 12 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin: funny you said that, I was sorta thinking the same thing.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what all will be in the book? see the homepage of Pitchfork

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/

Anyway - they will be informing us of their Top 50 Albums of 2003 - next week on the website.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what all will be in the book?

haha, I'd like to know myself! (I do hope the Trice reivew is included - I don't think I'm spoiling anything by saying it's not one of the top 50 albums of the year, so it would have to be selected by Ryan for the "best writing" section. He does like that review, so hopefully it will make the cut.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but it's not v. specific where it could be.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

mainly i just wanna know what the best 30 reviews of 2003 will be.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they hired a real editor.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"also, if you believe the water cooler rumors, the staff basically forced him to include the obie trice review."

haha, ethan's next psuedonym should be allan j. favish.

Rob Mitchum, Friday, 12 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my fear is that - with 50 postive reviews already being printed in the Best Albums of the Year section - the examples of the site's "best writing" will be heavily weighted toward smarmy pans. *sigh*

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

can't knock the hustle.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 12 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be much more likely to buy it if they just gave each writer a chapter in which to summarize how they spent the year in music.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 12 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"I stayed at home and listened to promos that came in the mail."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 December 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

ned otm.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"I stayed at home and listened to promos that came in the mail."
-- Ned Raggett December 12th, 2003.

A damn lie. Often, I was outside walking around while listning to promos. Sometimes running. Other times riding the bus.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 12 December 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"I stayed at home and downloaded promos."

"So I could review them six weeks before release."

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 12 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"listened" to promos.

marcg (marcg), Friday, 12 December 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Once I picked up deux femmes de Quebec to listen to promos with me. Although I told them I wrote for VICE, so maybe that doesn't count.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you probably would have been better off telling them you wrote for pfork, frankly.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

did i ever tell the "heated pitchfork discussion in the record store a few weeks back" story?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

No. Do we want to hear it?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

DO tell!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell us, fiddo.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't remember most of it, but:

Three 18-20 collegiate males. One of them had a puffy paint pink brontosaurus on his cardigan. Self-applied, as if it needed to be said.

At least two had pube-staches.

They proceeded to loudly walk around the store and go through nearly every CD - RECITING FROM MEMORY - Pfork's ratings (yes, the numerical ratings) and their opinion on the record. They were especially upset with Northern State. They also didn't understand why Pitchfork was talking about hip-hop. But they agreed with the Broken Social Scene assessment.

The indie-ish girl behind the counter was not enticed to take her clothes of by their knowledge.

None of them bought anything.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

we must reenact this scenario in NYC with Dave Q posts

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not putting a pink puffy paint brontosaurus on my clothes.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i am still kinda floored by that, frankly.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this wasn't exactly an art school kind of town either (villanova), so how these guys weren't getting their asses kicked daily is beyond me.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

strength in #s

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"we must reenact this scenario in NYC with Dave Q posts"
that i would love to see

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 12 December 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think fiddo just described what I'd see if I ever dropped acid at an indie record store

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I am amazed! To a point.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the word "forkmart" will be stuck in my head, poss. as a potential substitution for "asshat"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

They really do have their head shoved so ridiculously far up their ass.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 12 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They really do have their head shoved so ridiculously far up their ass.

You're not really "the smart one" on your paper, are you?

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Saturday, 13 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think by the time cover designs were floated toward the Pfork staff they were already headed in an irretrievably McSwnys-ish. But yeah, I was surprised by that whole aesthetic. (Especially cause it looks kinda specifically like the last McSwnys.) (Note that I'm using Eggers's own back-patting vowel-less abbreviation.)

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(Note also that the word "direction" is missing from the first sentence of that post.)

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 13 December 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

So now people who don't spend time on the internet can find out how unreadable Pitchfork is.

Unum, Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer to call this "the bathroom edition."

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a start

dleone (dleone), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Who owns the copyright to PFork reviews, the author or the entity?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"I prefer to call this "the bathroom edition." "

There's a really obvious joke here just begging to be made...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

silly nabisco, it's "mcswys".

and i think the decision to go with that aesthetic is more henry owings' than pitchfork's...i seem to be fairly alone in my mcsweeneys love on staff.

Rob Mitchum, Saturday, 13 December 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Obie Trice review makes my head hurt. I wish I could say I get it.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think they clean them first? I mean, pulling something out that's lodged that far up Ryan Schreiber's rectum can't be hygenic...

Stupid (Stupid), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This should be put on gift-book shelves.

adam michel (adam michel), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Which mcswys do you think it looks like?

Mark (MarkR), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

it just looks like mc sweeneys in general,or at least the website and the few issues i've seen..
i like the idea of books like this though, even if i don't really agree with pfork a lot of the time if i got this as a christmas present i wouldn't complain...

robin (robin), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My McSweeney's Moment ("Father of the Year")

Mark (MarkR), Saturday, 13 December 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And thus Id and his merry band of asslickers spread their subliterate ways across the world.
