chuck said this in one of the CDR Go! threads.. the one for 69. I didn't want to pollute that one with a major digression so I'm starting a thread for it here.
"Why do you guys obsess about years??? If something rocks, then it's 'rock music'! I mean, it's not too hard to follow, right!"
And Matos responded very cogently with the fact that this will prevent a lot of overlap. I'll also add that in some microcosm of pop/rock/popular music or whatever, it puts things into a little more perspective. And yeah, for compilation purposes, it gets ridiculous to obsess TOO much in the tail end/front end of years, sure. Time is time is time. Really, the quantization of time is just that, a way to put marks somewhere in history in a mathematical fashion. What's the difference between Dec 31st, 19XX and January 1st, 19XX+1? etc.
But I further refute: Why fucking NOT obsess about years?
But music/art/culture HAS indeed put an emphasis about "rememeber the year 19XX?" for a good many decades.. so much that this is the way we tend to date music and think about it. Otherwise, we wouldn't have a gazillion "best hits of 19XX" compilations, or put together all these goddamn year-end polls (that personally tell even less than these compilations about that specific year, in my humble opinion)
Some people TREASURE specific years of music, or more generally, specific moments in their life. Being born. Graduating from high school. Getting married. Getting divorced (oof). etc. I don't see the big crime in WANTING to obsess about a specific year, and wanting to know what people were humming or rocking or fucking to that year, you know?

Dude, that was me! I'm so embarrassed now.

(I thought the fakeness would've also been obvious by the non-sequitur about "rock music"; I was trying to parody Chuck in three sentences.)

(Don't let that stop this from turning into a good thread, though. It IS a good question.)
