Okay, what's this new R&B song with the eastern sounding violin in it?

I think it's new anyway. It sounds Arab, but it's such a brief snippet it's hard to tell for sure.

Are you talking about that Truth Hurts song with Rakim at the end? It's called "Addictive," but the whole Middle-Eastern vibe thing is getting so popular that it could be a lot of songs.

That's songs a bit old (year or so) tho

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I just listened to a bit of that and I don't think it was that. It may not be new. I don't follow this music, but I hear it occasionally, of course, and this was something I just heard in a grocerty store.

It's not great or anything, but I was wondering. I think I might like this "Addictive" (which I remember people talking about) better.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, unfortunately I can't get past that "returns my pages" lyric, but you can't go wrong with Rakim Allah.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I preferred it when I thought she was saying "he turns my pages" and it was supposed to be some weird metaphor for how he allowed the narrative of her personality to unfurl or something.

But surely "returns my pages" is no more of an oddly clunky techno-gadget reference than Kelis saying "don't need no pager/don't need no cellular (though digital's better!)" on "Get Along With You".

Wasn't there a big ol' lawsuit as a result of this? The Indian composer in question wasn't notified (it was a sample)? Am I remembering this right?

I preferred it when I thought she was saying "he turns my pages" and it was supposed to be some weird metaphor for how he allowed the narrative of her personality to unfurl or something.

That's what I DID think she was singing until this thread. Oh well. "He turns my pages" would be quasi-sexual too, like an extension of "he turns me on". I think I will not look up these lyrics and continue to assume that's what she does sing.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 13 December 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought it was 'he turns my pages' too....i always imagined that she would say 'and he gave me a right good flicking too' to the camera in a frankie howard style as well, but this never happened

zappi (joni), Saturday, 13 December 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

A google search confirms that it is "He turns my pages."

Also, Bappi Lahiri (sp?), the Indian composer, did file a lawsuit against Dr Dre. What is funny is that "Addictive" became so popular with Indian club-goers that it led to a deluge of old Hindi songs being remixed to sound exactly like "Addictive". So what may have initially started of as 'cultural larceny' ended up being a cool sort of 'cultural exchange'.

Rockist, is it "B R Right" by Trina?

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's that one either. I don't remember any male rapper in this song that I heard.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Trina's female, RS.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ludacris is not.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Aight?

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah. Oops.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is it toxic by britney spears? (not really rnb but definitely has dramatic eastern violins)

minna (minna), Monday, 15 December 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the one. I am one of those rare listeners who do not recognize Britney Spears when I hear her.

Sorry for the mix-up in calling it R&B. Most current R&B doesn't sound like what I think of as R&B, so it doesn't sound too much less like R&B than most current R&B does (to me).

Anyway, not bad.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 15 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, that's the sort of formulaic violin that I think is overused in Arabic music after the 50's, but it's still interesting to hear it pop up somewhere else.
