FUNNY BANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems like we've reached a level of perpetual one-upping that's resulted in a great jumbled mass of bands out there that are "ironic"/parodies/novelty/etc.

Has this been going on for a long time or is it a new phenomenon?

Seek out some Spike Jones.

I know novelty isn't new, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed the recent overwhelmingness of it all.

adam michel (adam michel), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Which bands?

jazz odysseus, Saturday, 13 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Squirrels can take any of them, whoever they might be.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the diff'rent darkness are probably hilarious.

AKM doesn't like Jonathan Richman because he says he is "funny rock". I said that Jonathan is not SUPPOSED to be funny.

the Gin Blossoms are a funny band

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking of bands like liars and those of a similar ilk.
and perhaps:
need new body
the darkness
eels (or are they serious?..."lone wolf"?)
bikeride
tunnel of love

there are many more I group with these, but I'm afraid their facade of seriousness (part of the humor) might have too many people convinced. (xiu xiu? sorry.)

the Waitresses straddle the novelty line with most of their songs

Aaron A., Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

hidden cameras

Red Kross were fun too. and funny. And Awesome.

Adam, I think Jonathan is supposed to funny SOMETIMES. But he's also supposed to be, y'know, moving. I mean, "Chewing Gum Wrapper" f'r inst, just might be the greatest thing in the whole world. It's funny, yes, but he means it too.

(i can relate to this)

HuckleberryMann, Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But hahaha funny? Tenacious D "funny"? I think not.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Frogs??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

as in FUNNY as sole point of existence? no.

HuckleberryMann, Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

jonathan richman is also funny in respect to his crying issue.
and i've heard his dancing is really somethin else.

adam michel (adam michel), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Geez. I missed the point.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard his dancing is really somethin else.

Especially when he frequents the lesbian bar.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

or when he's playing by himself and only has two mic's (one for his mouth, on for his guitar) and he dances away from them, but KEEPS playing and only the people who are right up at the stage can hear him. Saw him almost 10 years ago (as in 9.5) and also saw him do the same thing on Conan a few weeks later, which was even funnier because you couldn't exactly lean in towards your TV to hear him better!

HuckleberryMann, Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

did he do the get-down-on-one-knee thing 9.5 years ago?

adam michel (adam michel), Sunday, 14 December 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

not that I remember (and I probably would remember)
it was a very poorly attended Wednesday night show, and I was in the club illegally being only 17. It was the first time I used my premature facial hair for non-getting blotto purposes.
