Should I buy the Paul Westerberg DVD?

I haven't heard much about it. Is it like a documentary? Not so into the new Grandpaboy album, but still curious to see what the man is up to these days.

Weren't there two new albums this year?

I still retain a curiousity, but I've never really got into any of this Grandpaboy stuff. I'd like to see the DVD, mostly as I have no idea what Westerberg is like in person. A friend met him and just said he was "nice".

new Grandpaboy on Fat Possum is a country-blues record. Not offensive, actually a few rockin' tunes, but we love Paul because he's a masterful songwriter, not because hg's a 'bluesman' - his rockabilly leanings are so full of cliche, and he uses genre exercise as an excuse to write lyrics that are way below his potential.

He was on Letterman playing "High Time" off of "Mono", and it was pretty below par. Old Paul appeared to have put on a bit of weight, too (no bad thing maybe).

Yes Roger, it's the country blues thing that I saw last, I think I mistook it for a covers album.

It's ~$15 at http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com. I have it, and wouldn't recommend it to a non-fan. The footage is a combination of stuff PW and friends shot, and fan footage requested through the fine PW fansite when the PW footage was found lacking. It's the video equivalent of the last few PW releases - unpolished and unapologetic. So if you haven't liked his latest releases, you might
not like the DVD, despite the inclusion of 'mats staples.

I miss the albums where more time was spent polishing the songs' rawness. The DVD, documenting Paul's solo tour, avoids any luster, so it has an "on the fly" vibe. Still for me, it's got those moments where his lyrics resonate or where the interplay between him and his audience makes me smile, and $15 seems a cheap price for the amount of songs stuffed onto it.

Why isn't there a Replacements* DVD? I want it.

*not the football movie

I haven't bought the new albums, they sounded like sup-par versions of "Mono". Even PW has dissed them. Is there anything to recommend 'em?

Yes, it's possible he's taken this lo-fi thing as far as it can go... with Dead Man Shake it seems he's finally turned into Alex Chilton
