Sometimes you get so despondent over the state of 'pop' that you latch on desperately to ridiculous causes, for NME it's Str*kes, with DQ you'll notice I find an excuse to mention Slipknot in every thread going. So here's another - what's everyone's take on 'costume bands'? Sl*pkn*t, Devo, Adam Ant, the Monks, Kiss, Residents, etc. - bands that are NEVER seen otherwise. I personally think it takes alot of strength of will to risk looking like an idiot on-and-off stage, builds up stoic endurance and character that MUST rub off on the music, but some think they're the biggest scams ever! Which is it?

What does it mean when a band plays naked? Why do so many bands do this? Red Hot Chilli Peppers, that guy from the Dwarves, the Mummies, GG Allin. Does naked also = gimmick?...The significance must be...the musics not so great but that guys running around naked! EWWW!

this new wave of costume bands seemed largely modled after fantasy games and insane clown posse (which shows you who the fan base of both might be)... Obscure folks like the Residents were way cool cuz they are playing a parody of pop-stars (search 'Meet The Residents' - they are aping the Beatles and pop consumerism)... Did they ever get the 4th eyeball back? Also - naked musicians, total dud in it's cheapest intent to convey the 'freak factor' of any band over actual talent...
