circus days

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I picked up a year-old copy of Urb in a waiting room the other day and found it surprisingly prescient.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

er, i meant "strange things are happening", sorry

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to get Rolling Stone for free. Since i stopped getting 'em, i'm looking to subscribe to something. I always thought those british rags were not bad (Q, Mojo), i browse pitchforkmedia from time to time but i really can't stand the writing. I just look at their news/new releases sections. Thinking about 'Outburn'...but it looks too 'hard stuff need only apply'...

whoever (whoever), Monday, 15 December 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Lately, it's been Uncut.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 15 December 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Antisemite. Oh, I see what you meant, sorry.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Coming next issue: Schmegma-mania

may pang (maypang), Monday, 15 December 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Now-Uncut. Past-Wire/Melody maker/Underground

Skinny, Monday, 15 December 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

HHC is the only British music magazine worth reading. Dunno about stateside.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Record Mirror 1990

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

NME. They have an anti-professional, carefree, joyous approach to writing about music, which is a nice breath of fresh air from all the serious rock critic aristocracy that I detest so much. But you already know that.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I love accessible and easy-to-read writing about old music such as appears in top magazines like Uncut, Mojo, the All New Guardian Review and the Observer Music Monthly!

Eye Ronnie, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah!

Tsar Kazm (blueski), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I admit that I am jealous of Alexei Petridish because he's rich and famous and has been on Channel 4 Top 100 list programmes and I haven't. The envy gnaws away at me like Weil's-bearing rats in forgotten Silvertown boathouses.

Eye Ronnie, Monday, 15 December 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM
Observer Music Monthly
*cough* Bullit *cough*

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Do online music publications count? I don't think they should.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Now: DJmag, FACT and Vice's review/features sections.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 December 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're looking for a mag that does Pitchfork kinda stuff...I like Skyscraper okay.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sound Collector wins, even if it's not strictly a magazine.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 15 December 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I was drunk one night and accidently subscribed to Mojo, ethnocentrically thinking that the price was in US$. So it cost about twice as much as I expected (+/- $100/year). I was really pissed that I did it, but I have to say I've really started looking forward to my issue every month. I end up reading more about the 60s and 70s than I read about recent stuff, but it's been good overall, and I've liked the interviews and such.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you mean the Sound Projector? Or Record Collector?

udu wudu (udu wudu), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was drunk one night and accidently subscribed to Mojo

Daaaaammmn.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sound Collector sure is great.

so is Sound Projector

jl (Jon L), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Careless Talk Costs Lives - if that is still current.

I didn't know about 95% of the bands and didn't care about 90% of them. But I still bought it and read it and felt like other people felt the same.

Needed - and Plan B needs - less garage/guitar/angsty music and more of the stuff we hear.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of English language ones, Q rules. Mojo and Uncut are also great. The rest all suck.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw. I think Uncut (which has become increasingly retro-oriented lately) has a tendency to pick more interesting retro bands and acts than Mojo do. The "Acid Daze - 18 Psychedelic Classics From The UK Underground" CD that came with the magazine about half a year ago must be the best freebie CD ever to come with any music mag!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna echo that. I just started buying those British mags for the included CDs. For $9.95 (or $12.95 for Mojo) Canadian, it just seems a good buy.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone remeber the short lived Underground/UG around 1987-1988? Probably the best indie mag the Uk produced, if short lived.

Russell Dixon (Skinny), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Deuce!

He he, Sound Projector is ace, cause HSA sometimes writes for them. ;-)

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Underground was rather cool, and they folded just before they were about to publish an article on Felt which pissed me off. Then they went glossy and called themselves "Offbeat" for about 5 issues and folded again. The only things I can remember about Offbeat were an article on Factory (Tony Wilson: "We have the best rock band in New Order, the best dance band in Happy Mondays and the best solo artist in Cath Carroll") and another about Pacific.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone remeber the short lived Underground/UG around 1987-1988? Probably the best indie mag the Uk produced, if short lived.

I had every issue of that, it introduced to a whole new world of secret things when I was a kid, it was like getting the keys to the kindgom - Negativland, Wolfhounds, Go-Betweens, Slovenly, Dinosaur, Dog-Faced Hermans, the Ex, the Chills, Slab!, the Pastels, Cabaret Voltaire... loads of stuff that was falling between the cracks of the big inkies for the most part. All this obscure-to-me shit listed in there in horrible tiny print but this was available for absolute bobbins from the local newsagent. I think it was published around 1986 or so, edited by Dave Henderson. Can't remember much of the actual writing though, so it could well have been total cock, who knows. But it was rammed with little reviews which I just hoovered-up.

x-post

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Continuing the Underground theme... the first issue was Jan or Feb '87, a free copy that came with that week's copy of Sounds, then it went monthly until the summer of '88. They also had two rather fabulous cassettes on the covers, one was "Rhythm and noise" which was the soundtrack to my first few weeks in Sheffield Poly. It had an early Cabaret Voltaire track, some Depeche Mode, "Warm Leatherette"... oh it was wonderful. "Strum and hum" was the follow up with "Karen" by the Go-Betweens, an acoustic Weddoes track, Miaow, the Raw Herbs... great days, great mag.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Zig Zag >> Underground >> Lizard >> Immerse >> Beware the Cat...we still waiting for this decades mag as good as those

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: the Underground tapes - A song called "She's A Nurse" was on one of 'em right? Was that the Raw Herbs? And don't forget '4 Hours' by Clock DVA - that song was f*cking great!

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)
