me ?

ELO. that 70's pastiche that all love to hate.

all bloody weekend. and i loved it. from the pompous to the ridiculous. ELO2, Face The music, Eldorado, A New World record ..

excellent all of it .. huge stuff. no doubt you ILM'ers rate this lot as the worst of the worst of 70's excess but with songs as strong as Dont Bring Me Down, Evil Woman, Tightrope, Kuiama, Rockaria etc etc then all becomes a lot more fun.

so, prefer small time small scale garage rock mess versus this over produced beatles ripping melodic slush ?

yup any day

bring it on ..

I love ELO. LOVE ! You didn't even mention Out of the Blue!

Sean (Sean), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered I prefer girls with big teeth. And about time!

DarrensCoq, Monday, 15 December 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

well you see there is a reason. this was my Vinyl based stuff. Out of the Blue is recently picked up on shiny disc and so have had that pleasure a lot, but these were all first listenings for Years as i have been without a record deck for ages.
but yes that album is worth thread of its own. i think for me Face the Music is a perfect combi of all out songs and OTT prog, and entertainment factor to the max. is have to say that Discovery didn't hit the spot .. disco sound production added stuff i didn't rate and Time sounded far too cliched and so didn't make to side two .. yet i recall loving the album when in my teens .. but the ealry stuff still holds up .. amazed to see very little in the way of ILM threads on this lot ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered that the Cricketers Pub in Hackney has a raging dancehall and R&B night, though all the music is consistently 1-2 years old

I also discovered that if you're recording music off the radio onto a minidisc you should use batteries, because if you plug your minidisc into the wall the electricity in your house makes a weird circuit and everything goes "whssszzzzhhhhhh"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

so what did you discover this weekend?

that James Hall/ The Pleasure Club RULEZ!!!

Will (will), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That St Etienne may well be my favourite band of all time. Last night's gig was fantastic - wall to wall hits and she is such a star.

chris (chris), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

james hall - same james hall that released solo lp's a few years ago that had high profile then no-one bought em ? (i picked up his second solo lp and twas not a good un has to be said)

mark e (mark e), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered that "Beatown" by XTC is facking great, and I'd never heard it before Sunday.

Schwingung (Damian), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that should probably be "RULEZ LIVE!!!" as I've never heard a note of his/ their recorded material.

Will (will), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I discovered driving by the airport makes any song twice as exciting when you hear flyovers.

DarrensCoq, Monday, 15 December 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, when i'm in the car w/some friends and we're listening to a mix i've made and i know a "dodgy mix" is coming up i drive over by the airport real quick, and i usually get a plane going "whoooooshhhh" just in time

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 15 December 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

that the friend I was worrying over is going to be OK--if not in her situation, in her handling of it. and that despite a couple weeks' awkwardness things are actually cool between us and could potentially become, uh, cooler.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Saint Etienne at the Palladium last night were fantastic. As indeed were ELO, even if Bev Bevan is a div!

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 15 December 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i discovered that i could give a springsteen tribute band the middle finger, repeatedly, and not get thrown out of the club.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered that I don't really fear mobile phones now that someone's actually bought one for me and I've learnt how to use it, and it's rather fun programming it to play ringtones of songs I wrote for the Cloud Minders.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stranglers' bass. My god, I normally hate HSA's old punk albums, but that bass is astonishing. It sounds like the nastiest Rickenbacker bass bite on earth, run through the nastiest distortion pedal on earth. If that bass were an animal, it would be a huge, bristling, mouth-foaming plague rat. Wow.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered that "Another Green World" is a very comforting album if you're feeling sleepy and a bit unwell. Actually I think that's re-discovered.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That Marissa Marchant might actually have the ability to be able to whip Nora Jones's ass. But she's way too psycho to ever get the chance...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered bismallah khan's shenai is quite a nasty thing.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have rediscovered that Simple Minds' Reel To Real Cacophony is a fantastic album, even if it is the most goff record to ever come out of Scotland.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What, goffier than Garlands?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 15 December 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, temporarily forgot about that particular feat of (also rather fine) goffdom. Secondmost goff record, then.

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 15 December 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered that I like to go salsa dancing. Also, I discovered that I want to buy The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (and this was before I heard about the Vatican incident).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, this book I'm reading on salsa in Cali, Colombia (which is excellent) made me realize what I should have guessed: that balroom dancing already had an influence on how people were dancing in Latin America in the 40's and 50's, by way of Hollywood.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I discovered a great website by photographer Allen Tannenbaum which featured, along with some great archival photographs of NYC from the 1970's, some great shots of my beloved DEVO, not least pics from the first concert I ever attended (Devo at Radio City on Halloween, 1981).

http://www.sohoblues.com/

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ah. Devo. fuckin class. this months Mojo goes all post punk and there is a rather fun photo of Devo in the mag .. not read the article but gonna hve to dig out my Devo stuff to celebrate .. and just why oh why did the UK release of Are We Not Men have such a crap cover when the US version of the cover was completely suiperb. i was lucky. holidays in miami when i was 16 - saw the US version and grabbed it purely for the cover art .. lucky me.
all time top 10 lp that one ....

mark e (mark e), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That "I And I Survive" is perfectly placed on "Rock For Light."

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Monday, 15 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, super psyched to see some love for ELO -- they're totally My First Band and I never stopped digging them.

This weekend I discovered that the "Goodbye Babylon" 6CD set of old school gospel is not good background music for making out, while "Ethiopiques 14," unsurprisingly, is.

yetimike (McGonigal), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the ridiculously good Quannum group Lifesavas, bought their album, have been playing the fuck out of it ever since.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Red House Painters.

Mmmmm....

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That I can't necessarily watch music channels for 7 hours straight without eventually passing out, the Prodigy's 'Your Love' doesn't get enough and that the Jaxx are on par with Cornelius live. And that I can actually score phone numbers if I try.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

for the 2nd time i heard a cover of "don't stop til you get enough" in, i dunno, panjabi or hindi or a southeast asian language i don't recognize! and for the 2nd time I FORGOT TO ASK what it was!! has anybody else heard this madness?

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a trailer for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind over the weekend, and I noticed that it had the same ELO song that was used in the tv commercials for Adaptation. Is "Mr. Blue Sky" now the official Charlie Kaufman theme song or something?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

has anybody else heard this madness?

No vahid but good lawd do I want to!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Zoomers were more than a one trick pony, moving from "good" to "amazing."

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Kid Rock have twin brothers playing guitar in his band? Because I watched his Christmas special on VH-1 and the two guitarists looked like twins (though the one has dirty brown hair and the other's hair is all bleached yellow). If so, damn cool gimmick, even if he did steal it from Puny Human (who have identical twins playing guitar and bass).

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 15 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that Robert Wyatt's 'Sea Song' is absolutely mesmerizing.,...

nothingleft (nothingleft), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

that Christmas music is best when used ironically, as it is in Bad Santa. Which is freakin' great, BTW.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)
