Does living in a vacuum suck?

Some bands seem to come into being with only a marginal knowledge of music as a whole, with only an interest in a few bands which they may or may not emulate. Others have a pretty broad musical vocabulary with a healthy record collection.

So, is a lack of knowledge a good thing or a bad one? This also leads into the situation where an artist has a really limited knowledge but goes back to listen to a variety of music before making more albums, and the end result is different, for better or worse.

OK, I had The Rapture about tenth on my list, but they're going to come up way too fast, so I'll start bashing other people.

The recent Outkast MTV outing had them picking some of their favorites, and the picks got some criticism here as being too pedestrian. So was that MTV toning them down, or would The Hives really be high on Andre's list?

Oh yeah, and there's something to be said about Radiohead listening to "avant garde" music from the 70s, but I dare not tread over well-trampled ground.

The "all back to mine" TV prog:

I saw a few. Charlene Spit wanted to play Marvin Gaye and Al Green and so on. too easy to guess.

Gil Scott Heon - It was his hotel room in any case!

Keith Allen - It was actually his house and playing some odd stuff. That seemed to be the general point of the Idea of the prog..

Considering the amount of bands around here still aping Slint I don't think a little knowledge would do any harm.

This isn't going to turn into a Shaggs debate, is it?

yetimike gets the prize for another band I was thinking of.

For some reason, I just wondered whether the Trachtenberg family fits in the category of "little outside influence," but then I realized they probably listen to all kinds of shit, even the little girl. And 90% of their schtick has absolutely nothing to do with the music or slideshow.

I think one of the problems with the local music scene where I am is that people have been told or decided what music is important and they don't stray far from that sphere. When will kids learn that saying the words "Brian Wilson" all day don't make you good?
