In which I contribute to the continuing mental deterioration of Ryan Adams

Oh snap

"Apparently, three things set Adams off: problems with the amplifiers, which likely stemmed from his inexperience with so many guitars; a bad review for opening band the Stills in the local weekly City Pages, and a York, Pa., newspaper article in which former Replacements singer Westerberg said the young rocker "needs to get his teeth kicked in.""

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

this is not damning with faint praise, btw, but it really doesn't seem to take much with him

I feel like singing "I pissed off a rock star" (to the playground neener-neener-neener tune)

"Bitter, old bitch"!!!!!!

Haha was he trying to offer Westerberg a beer?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, congratulations, Nate! I wonder what he was saying about your review. I read your Stills review - it wasn't that harsh or anything. I thought you were pretty reasonable.

"You don't trash the people you inspired," he said, calling the local singer "a bitter, old bitch." <-- This is totally nutso.

yay nate--- You should join forces with Robbie Fulks!

loved this zinger from the article:

Make no mistake, Adams is one of rock's most gifted modern songwriters.

I saw him once a few years ago, and he was pretty sloppy and drunk and sucky....he said he had broken his hand and blamed his performance on some pain pills he had taken....

The highlight of his show was when he let his roadie whose b-day it was get up and cover brown sugar....The old guy at least had a sense of perfessionalism, thank christ....It devolved at the end into a slopp(ier) jam session with Jayhawk's Gary Louris.

Hey Dan, Westy has been drinking beer for the past few years now on occasion.

Fuck Ryan Adams. He is the biggest asshole I've ever dealt with in my dozen years of interviewing musicians. He is a classic example of a guy who has read and believes his press. I think he's actually pretty talented, just too immature to bear.

I really wish he'd demonstrate some of this talent in his writing of songs and making of records.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

surely, matos, you have no sense of hearing!! Don't you remember when his song about NYC healed a nation.

Also, he isn't a one-trick pony, he isn't just about doing sub-Westerberg stuff....his only band Whiskeytown was sometimes sub-Uncle Tupelo, sub-Jayhawks, and sub-Wilco.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

whiskeytown was his OLD band, I mean, but also the only i guess (hopefully)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

by talent I mean the guy can play his instrument well and has a good sense of song. He merely lacks a complete sense of originality.

His lyrics on the past few albums have been beyond banal.

don weiner, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

He's had a couple of high points, but he's buried whatever knack he has under an avalanche of pure crap. And for some reason, I'm still seeing Rock 'n' Roll pop up on a number of year-end lists.

does anyone have a link to the westerberg interview?
