Do you care how much money your favourite musicians have?

First, is it easy to pick? Would, say, the drummer from the Strokes be rich yet? How much might Kardinal Offishal have? Al Green? Shaun Ryder?
Second, does it make you listen to musicians differently when you realise they don't *need* to put out music to survive?
Third, when listening to, say, Jigga, are you pleased to be able to do your own small part to add to his claims that he "sells more copies than Kinkos"? Or are you mildly resentful?

Don't care, really, though I do know that both of my favorite bands (Killing Joke and Firewater) are both quite low on funds.

i only care that the ones I like are able to make enough money to live decently and still put out more records.

Generally I don't care unelss it's Chr1s Mart1n, and then I want to stab out eyes and stuff. And I really, really don't mind if they're my favourite.

Yeah, I just get annoyed when musicians I love aren't making enough to get by.

I've always assumed my favourite musicians are broke (or very close to it.)

if i like an act, i generally want them to have success - and money would naturally follow from that. jigga's recorded output definitely benefits from him being wealthy. i like acts to be at a financial level that best suits their recorded output - and that probably varies from artist-to-artist. perhaps some work better with a smaller fanbase, and less luxurious lifestyle,

So you hope that they stay poor for your amusement! Being broke sucks, I hope everybody gets that paper!

ha! that's not quite what i said, but i see what you mean.

yeah, if bands want to make a lot of money, i wish them all the best. i like it especially when their financial rewards are at the same level as the rewards for the listener.

Am I right to assume that most indie fans want their heros to be poor?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck no! I did the whole freakin' dump money into pressing records, CDs, playing shows for crap money in Kansas City to 5 people....it sucks....may all the bands I like make big money (seriously!) even the bands I don't....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You might as well say "I assume most indie fans are jackasses" if that's what you mean....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm almost certain many of my favourite musicians are living hand-to-mouth

am i right to assume that most pop fans want their heros to be super-rich and arrogant?

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like mine to have nice houses and plenty of beer money

it never ever crosses my mind when i'm listening to or thinking about music. no different than when i read a book or watch a movie. i've got no idea, nor does even occur to me to wonder, how well off the author or the director is.

of course, i can't help but think about it when i read about someone like, say, justin timberlake, on page 6 or see him on a red carpet. i take it for granted that if he's running in that world, he's probably more well off than i'll ever know. which is, of course, the entire purpose of both gossip columns and red carpets: to let people like you and me know how little we are compared to they.

but then when i hear "rock your body," i go right back to not thinking about it and not caring.
