wired for sound (by cliff richard)

i first heard this song on that "pop up video" programme that was on channel 4. it didn't make a great impression, but for some reason, the melody stayed with me, and i grew to like it without hearing it again.

at the weekend, i'm at home, my mother is listening to RTE radio 1. it plays mainly garth brooks records, so i'm not really expecting anything good to come on, but then: cliff arrives!

I haven't heard it in a long while, and I'm so excited to hear it that my voice goes up a pitch when i screech: "OHMYGOD! Its WIRED FOR SOUND!". and the song is even better than i remembered - easily the best thing the great sir cliff has put his name to - hard to believe he'd put out tosh like "saviour's day" after this - possibly The Greatest Pop Song of all time.

Kilian have you not seen the graphic for the Stylus singles countdown? I took that photo! That's my handwriting!

It's illegible but that bit in the middle to the left of the fold says "Cliff fucking Richard".

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 December 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

why is cliff in a list of 2003's best singles? did he release something this year?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i have appropriated the ascending melody idea in the "walking around with my head full of music" bit in many a song of mine. an indirect influence on me, then.

The thing is, that list was just an arbitrary scribble of everyone I could remember who'd released a record at all, it just happens that Cliff was in the middle and Todd & I liked the image...

Double or treble ace.

Reminds me of pretending to rollerskate round a late night supermarket.

Woh, woh, woh.

this thread is somewhat crazed

come on he looks like the biggest dick ever in the video
the song has some impressive production
but otherwise smells of bellybutton cheese
there must be some arifacts even irony cannot retrieve

i'm not trying to spoil anyone's party

pete s, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

and may i add i have enough trouble with mental/physical coordination when i'm just listening to a walkman on the street.
but roller-skating aswell?!!
the body-count would be frightening

pete s, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy has had his moments (although few) and "Wired For Sound" is definitely one of them. Certainly a great pop song.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Great Alan Tarney production. He had such an individual sound.

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"i'm not trying to spoil anyones party"

pffft yeah right.

"We Don't Talk Anymore" is great, don't remember this one much.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This has undoubtedly the most early-80s "wooh, look at me and my modern technology" feel of any song or video ever. I mean, I can roller-skate! With my headphones!! Wooh!!! It should be in a Blue-Peteresque time capsule to define 1981.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It was the last of Cliff's great run of 1976-81 singles (all either Bruce Welch or Alan Tarney produced). Kind of the missing link between Des O'Connor's "Dick-A-Dum-Dum" and BEF's "Music For Stowaways."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"We Don't Talk Anymore", "Wired For Sound", and "Devil Woman" basically makes up all the Cliff Richard songs worth paying attention too.

But I guess he is satisfied anyway. I mean, not a lot of people have had a career spanning 45 years of hits. The guy has had at least one UK #1 every decade since the 50s, which is a record ever unlikely to be beaten. I just cannot see why.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Rubbish. Cliff's early hits 'Move it' etc. are his only good stuff, and they're pretty cool.

pete s, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No. Compare "High Class Baby" to "You're so square"

Both have 'untrendy' girls, one drops her the other does not care and sees her for her true self.

surprised no-one's mentioned the BBC documentary that was on the other week. Both enjoyable and scary. But with 'santa's list' entering the chart at a mere #5 or #6 this week, all is well.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the doc. Bit of a shame what he did to Bruce Welch.

pete s, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
This is on my latest mix CD and I like it a great deal - so optimistic!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never actually possessed a copy of this track. i think i enjoy the thrill of hearing it out of the blue.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's records like this that reaffirm my love of irony.
