Do You Know Anyone With Infallible Taste?

OED def. of 'infallible' = incapable of error

I don't mean someone - a critic, a friend, a partner, an ILM poster - who agrees w/ and validates yr taste, so much as someone whose reccomendations and/or aesthetic judgements are ALWAYS spot on, or who help you to appreciate something you'd perhaps not yet 'got'.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I know someone like that. You don't know him, so I won't mention his name. But we bonded in 9th grade over De La Soul is Dead, and haven't had many arguments since then. He makes the best dance hall mixes EVER.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

answer to thread qn: yes, even if he does like love and rockets.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Most people on ILM.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

absolutely nobody. no-one has even come close.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I'll tell you who he is (why not)? He's DJ Lil Tiger.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If it weren't for that "ALWAYS", I could've at least tried to think of someone "infallible"...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

There are people whose tastes I largely trust EXCEPT they'll then big-up an artist I can't stand and I have to wonder if the defect lies with them or me. (Usual suspects to thread, etc.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

its a good question but not a concept i appreciate really - listening to music is often all about getting caught up then caught out and changing your mind, being completely and utterly embarresed cos you were wrong or getting into stuff far too late.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but it's good to have a reliable sherpa.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I would seperate "listening to music" from "wearing your music as a badge", actually; if all you're interested in is the music, it doesn't matter if you change your mind or get into something late or grow to despise something. If, however, your love of music is also tied to your self-identity AND your self-identity has a strong "trendsetter" component (something true of a good number of ILMers, if not all of us), then all of the stuff you bring up is vitally important.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Me, innit?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Xgau.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh hells no.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My idea of "infallible taste" means their reasons for liking/disliking something come from years of experience and are neither superficial nor dismissive -- and, more importantly, they're willing to straddle both sides of a divide whether critically-imposed or otherwise (i.e.. finding respective value in both teen-pop and rockisback or both punk and disco). And they never, ever say shit like "this band's fans are stupid".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(that last post wasn't really connected to/inspired by Xgau though I was sorta thinking of his Discovery pan)

(also by "dismissive" I mean casual/glib/can't-be-arsed)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I don't know anybody at all who even comes close to reflecting my taste. Not that my taste is any good.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

And they never, ever say shit like "this band's fans are stupid".

Not even when years of experience tells them so?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose you could make exceptions for youknowwhatdriver or the like, but I was thinking more like AC/DC or something.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, ok. Yeah, that's unnecessary.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

you know that band you hate, you really really hate?
i love them. got all their records.
that song they do? you know, the one that makes you want to break things?
its going to be played at my funeral.
in fact i've had a special solar powered gravestone built so it plays on a loop. forever.

zappi (joni), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the goths will hate you for that

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The goths will hate people no matter what. Hell, they'll be jealous of him for being dead.

, Monday, 15 December 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Why can't I ever go for a quiet afternoon in a lovely cemetery without spotting some sad band of goths? (This is not a joke, BTW.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post)
not if i get bauhaus to rerecord 'bela lugosis dead' with my name in place of belas.....in fact this could be a moneyspinner! think of all those goths who dream of being immortal, bauhaus proclaiming their gothdom for eternity has got to be worth some $$$...anyone got pete murphys phone number?

zappi (joni), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I know someone whose taste is violently at odds with mine, but who always seems to know what I would like - and so if she recommends something specifically to me (as opposed to babbling about whatever indie boys/Pop Idol contestants she's obsessing over that week), I generally trust her.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope the Xgau mention was for a laugh.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Me!

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Kylie Minogue and dis Dizzee Rascal because he doesn't pay me to pray about his shit. I win.

js keeganh (cs appleby), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

two or three ilm posters are ppl whose recommendations I'll check, and whose judgements I trust and who seem to be just have the 'right' take on a particurlar record. I won't say who they are bcz i don't want to embarass them.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(ans to thread)

Me. I am (or was) that dude to a few other dudes...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I was to my younger brother when we were younger - I can't think of a single band I recommended to him that he didn't like. I don't listen to anyone else's opinions now. OK, I listen / read them, but there's no-one I can think of amongst friends/writers/posters who influences me the way things used to when I was younger. But then, I am a grumpy old self-righteous git now.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

julio's obv. talking about geir and aja

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

'';-)''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm, what about papal infallibility?

What's John Paul 2's take regarding the Rapture?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"jeep music's back - warm up the popemobile!"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

People with infallible taste are boring.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

anyhow, the answer to this question is obv. whatever girl you're trying to pick up at the moment

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"i agree, tori's totally a genius"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm, that's marissa youre talking to...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought a scruffy the cat album once and i bought a moby album once. other than that i've been golden.

scott seward, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Definetely when I was younger there were periods when one person's recommendations meant the world, and it'd go for bands, books and movies and paintings too. But those were more absolute kind of this or that and searching for my own opinion days. Now everyone's a useless tit with occasionally agreeable taste.

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The staff of Kerrang!

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

A couple of ILM regulars, but I'm not gonna name them cos it'll go their heads.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Adam! That's sweet.
(This is a joke by the way.)
(No, seriously.)
