etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rock to it. I have Vol. 11 with many of the same artists.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

it was compiled by Ned Raggett [alternately, insert any SoCal Brit-besotted ILxor]

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the paris angels track is fucking killer, and the flowered up one is great too. actually that CD would be quite a good "indie" primer

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't get across how much i love "perfume". my favourite baggy track by so so many miles

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the inspiral carpets and wedding present songs remain good. the rest? couldn't sit through 'em.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"perfume" should have been released on factory, that would have been so perfect

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it's in the cheap bin @ real groovy & I'm seriously tempted (mainly for probably being the only place ever I can get a copy of "All On You (Perfume)" by Paris Angels, which is the most blissy breezy microhouse-y (eg Autobianchi) esque indie-dance track evah).

currently downloading stuff.

fuck 5x-posts!

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the farm track reminds me of "work it".

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the soup dragons track has too much guitar.

(nb I haven't heard most of these bands/tracks yet)

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread inspired me to download some Carter!

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

that's my favourite Loop track, but probably my least favourite Sundays track from that album.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't quite convince myself that the Birdland track isn't the Stone Roses in disguise (with an annoying singer).

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and an annoying guitar solo.

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the sundays track is a lot BIGGER (in a "pure shores" layering sense) than I'd expected. "pure shores" + this mortal coil's "song to the siren"?

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm inevitably disappointed that the second spacemen 3 track i've heard isn't acid house. sigh. better than brmc, but not by a huge a gulf as i'd like.

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the first?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the intro to the heart throbs track sets me up for a very sudden fall. if only there was a way to take out that annoying guitar (it's an equiv to 80s drums or something!) out of it!
the vocals remind me, in a good way, of lush.

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

were all those bands (even new order and depeche mode) really considered "indie" in the uk?? weird!!

chuck, Monday, 15 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I remember liking "Dreamtime", though, actually.

chuck, Monday, 15 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

esoj - the 63rd best single of the 90s. ps, would you let me attempt to remix a tugb04t track inna paris angels stylee?

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

gotta run - will be back later in the afternoon to complete the assessment.

etc, Monday, 15 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

absolutely! that would be jolly neat actually

"big city" is probably my fave S3 track.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(xp)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"it's on" is pretty great, even though it's nothing like "weekender". saint etienne inna thug stylee!

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"forever dancing" by beloved, wtf!!! i really don't wanna try & untangle the parentage of this one!

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

oh that heartthrobs song is BLISS. I miss that year!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the front 242 track sorta sounds like predator 2 if arnold hadn't been replaced by danny glover as the hero.

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i went through some major hoops back in 1991 getting hold of that Shamen 12". ordering import stuff pre-internet was a BITCH

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the wedding present track bores me. are they always like this? like late-period husker du, blah

(hey esoj you wouldn't happen to be a fan of section 25's "looking from a hill", would you?)
(nb : do people actually dance in melbourne? & if so, to what?)

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If that compilation is from 1991, then why are all of the tracks from 1989?

I have Vol X here, which is from late 1990, so I guess that 1989 would be a more correct date of "Best Of Indie Top 20 Volume 1"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a best-of the previous comps, geir.

the carter usm track sounds like thomas fehlmann being possessed by the mutant offspring of poison & the klf!
(or maybe the other way round)

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

'looking from a hilltop' is a fecking classic!

people in melbourne dance to all sorts of stuff. britpop seems to go down a treat, as does most new wave and, oddly, interpol. last time i dj'ed i played le tigre and the rapture too to good reponse.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm vaguely surprised the loop track doesn't sound like black sabbath getting getting gradually sucked into a black hole. hmmmn.

(how about mutant disco? or uh other dance-punk? haha I hear there's lots of GOTHS/factory obsessives (or faint fans) (nb this belief may be due to my window to melbourne = yr/trayce's jrnls, haha))

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh there's heaps but i haven't been to those clubs much. melbourne is pretty much "we'll dance to anything we know"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the sugarcubes track is fucking w/my head. severe exposure!

(haha & how to they come to "know" things?)

etc, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

through being slowly secreted into playlists by the "cool" djs mainly. or through being radio saturated.

i have a similar compilation to the one being discussed that has the Sugarcubes' "Birthday" remixed by William and Jim Reid. it fucking rules. the bit where Bjork is going "ohhhh oh oh oh" or whatever, they're going "hey hey hey" and it's beguiling and very cool.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I WANT THIS COMP.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

which one, the top one or mine?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

YES

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Bin the first 8, the last 2 and The Wedding Present and you might fill one side of a C90 with something listenable. Loop, Front242 and Spacemen3 tracks are stand-outs.
I'm leaving Birdland in for sentimental reasons (first date with the girl who is now my wife) despite them being, for want of a better word, pish.

GerryNemo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there a Video version of this? I think I have it in the garage/loft.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"that's my favourite Loop track, but probably my least favourite Sundays track from that album."

Is this saying much jim? (what's your favourite?)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

great comp, The Soup Dragons really did suck balls tho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

HELLO MY TEENAGE YEARS! All these tracks are good obviously. Except Birdland.

Esoj is right about most of these, including the Sundays.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

favourite sundays is "my finest hour", a total classic

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

6.THE BELOVED - Forever Dancing
11.FRONT 242 - Head Hunter (VI)
15.DINOSAUR JNR. - Freak Scene
16.SPACEMEN 3 - Revolution
18.BIRDLAND - Sleep With Me
19.LOOP - Arc-Lite
21.THE SUNDAYS - Joy
22.THE HEART THROBS - Dreamtime

are the ones i have never heard

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dinosaur track's pretty ok, the Spacemen 3's an MC5 riff

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve - you're definitely missing out on 15, 16, 18 (I know but it's quite catchy) and 19

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually you're not missing out anything with "Revolution" - fucking awful, worst S3 track by miles, Primal Scream even now could try for months and fail to make anything as cringey.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Arc-Lite" is good though, it was a great rock track for indie wusses like me who were scared of actual rock.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah there are S3 songs miles better.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

swervedriver just missed out here then?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Now the initial flush of nostalgia has passed there is a bit of rubbish on here, i.e. the Heart Throbs, but I do really want to hear "It's On" again, have you got deep pockets etc etc.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Indie Top 20 Comp I actually owned was their full-on baggy one which has a lot of these, it also had "Monster In The House" by Fini Tribe and "Get A Knife Between Your Teeth" by McCarthy.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

that flute noise in it's on is fantastic, this album is pretty much the playlist for Thursday night at the Montmartre in Chesterfield (Hi Tag!)

x-post The only one I have is one with lots of these on, plus the Field Mice doing Triangle. My old flatmate had one with Anna Ng by TMBG on it and various other nonsense.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

NB Chuck yes this was indie back when I was an indie kid.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that one Cabbage. It has Eardrum Buzz by Wire on which flabbergasts me with its grebtness each time I hear it.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the feller, I don't own Anna Ng, but I still find myself humming it after John used to play it all the time.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember thinking at the time that this record is a total fucking travesty. It represents the whole unadventurous Brit-centric indie narrow-fucking-mindedness that was ubiquitous throughout the whole of student culture in the late 80s. You can fill in your own blanks to suit your own tastes, but where are the hell are the likes of Sonic Youth, Public Enemy, NWA, My Bloody Valentine, AR Kane, Young Gods, Butthole Surfers, Fugazi, the Beatnigs et fucking cetera? Two US bands and one from Belgium out of 22 tracks. Jesus, what a blinkered load of old toss.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

obv i actually own this (double vinyl) and I think I dragged it along to the FT nite i played some choons at - i recently lent it to a work colleague who wanted to hear the Farm cover version.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

do a tracklist for a better comp of this type someone

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And one from Iceland!

PE and NWA were left off presumably for the same reason that LL Cool J and Biz Markie were left off.

The other stuff I remember being enormously popular among late 80s and early 90s students, OK maybe not AR Kane or The Young Gods but there were loads of people into Sonic Youth. The guys at Beechwood obviously were all jingle-jangle heads who got loved up and into indie-dance when that time came; I'm not sure what's "unadventurous" about most of the tracks here.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"PE and NWA were left off presumably for the same reason that LL Cool J and Biz Markie were left off."

they ain't indie being the answer presumably

Butthole surfers got on one of them though, as did Sonic Youth iirc

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

they ain't indie being the answer presumably

Were Birdland that indie? Didn't 'Sleep With Me' come out on MCA or something? I can't remember. My memory also lets me down as to when those big hip-hop labels stopped being indies, but yeah I guess well prior to then. Wish I were better equipped to argue that point...

I'm not sure what's "unadventurous" about most of the tracks here.

It just steers clear of all that was sonically or aesthetically challenging at the time. There must have been more going on than that lot surely? It's all just black denim sub-Wonderstuff blokey music, the mundane soundtrack to dancing on sticky cider-washed floors at student discos. It's like the Evening Session without the dance music.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Stevem, I would but you and everyone else would've already heard it, prob

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

what a load of rubbsish, where are Public enemy and NWA? oh, hold on....

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Posting that list wasn't an endorsement of it. It just fills the criteria of more of the same but better. ;o)

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it is a fantastic list though

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

12. Would-Be's - I'm Hardly Ever Wrong

I know most of those songs, but what the hell's that? Anyone care to hum it for me?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was amazed and delighted to see that there. It's a gentle (relatively) jangly pop number. I think the Would-Be's were Northern Irish. this was their finest moment by some distance. They're not to be confused with the Would-Be-Goods, obv. The Would-Be-Goods are by some distance the finer band of the two, I think.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! that list (both of them, actually) took me back to my indie teenage years as well! i know all of the songs (i wouldn't know all of the songs on a compilation nowadays, that's for sure).

the Sugarcubes' "Birthday" remixed by William and Jim Reid. it fucking rules.

i have that on 12". it does rule, it's great.

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

do a tracklist for a better comp of this type someone

I have the Indie Top 20 Vol 1 (that's the real Vol 1, not the "best of..Vol 1) mentioned upthread. There are some crackers on that - full listing is:

Mickey Way (The Candy Bar) - A Certain Ratio
Dickie Davies Eyes - Half Man Half Biscuit
Hang-Ten! - The Soup Dragons
Sometimes - Erasure
Please Don't Sandblast My House - One Thousand Violins
Loan Shark - Guana Batz
Oh Grebo I Think I Love You - Pop Will Eat Itself
You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends (Peel session) -
The Wedding Present
Lover & Confidante - Blue Aeroplanes
Transmission (Peel session) - Joy Division
Turn The Heater On (Peel session) - New Order
The Grip Of Love - Ghost Dance
Velveteen - The Rose Of Avalanche
Into The Groovy - Ciccone Youth
Completely & Utterly - The Chesterfields
Sorry To Embarrass You - Razorcuts
I Could Be In Heaven - The Flatmates
Beatnik Boy - Talulah Gosh
Throwaway - Mighty Mighty
The Day Before Tomorrow - BMX Bandits

Now, where's that twee-est music ever thread?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That Would-Be's record is really good.

Nick I still don't think that the Mondays, Paris Angels, Shamen, Flowered Up, Sugarcubes, New Order, Front 242 (and yes even the Farm!) were less adventurous than the stuff you mentioned, just prettier and less noisy.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"You're my beatnik boy, you make me jump for joy" ...

ah, the memories! Of falling about laughing the first time ever I heard that song.

That Indie top 20 vol 1 - all it's missing really is "Vomity Girl", "Therese" and something from McCarthy, maybe "Charles Windsor", to make it complete and utterly grebt.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

MY GOD STEVEM YOU'VE NEVER HEARD "Headhunter"???????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Would Be's were teenagers from County Caven in the Republic Of Ireland (not the North!). They came along with this great single and received a bit of press in the NME/MM at the time. As far as I know they gave up because the girl singer had to concentrate on her Leaving Cert studies (Irish equivalent of the A levels). I bought the 7" single at the time and might have even seen them on a college tour. Great things were expected but I never heard of them again after 1990. Twas a pity because for a while Ireland had this cool little indie band from the heart of the country! Haven't played that song in years but a few years but when I heard Pram in 1990 it reminded me a bit of them.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

by heart of the country I mean countryside.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha shows how much I know. I don't think I ever saw a 7" of IHEW, only a 12" (SELL-OUTS!). There was at least one subsequenrt single, David, is that right? Were any of them as good as IHEW?

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I own or owned the second single, I don't think it's as good though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a faint memory of a second single Tim now that Tom's mentioned it. They gave an interview on Irish radio at the time and I recall the singer coming across as this really naive girl from the farm type which was funny. The blokes also talked like complete boggers!! They didn't have any idea of what was going on in England apart from knowing about the Smiths I think. That sort of added to their appeal cause the single was really un-Irish sounding.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait to play "I'm Hardly Ever Wrong" now when I'm back in Waterford for the Christmas! It'll be the first record I put on.

David Gunnip (David Gunnip), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

To get back to the Paris Angels for a second, I saw them play a tiny club in Birmingham around the time that "Perfume" came out, and I'm pretty sure that it was the first song they played, the last song they played, and then we got them back on for an encore and they played it again. And it was amazing each time they played it. Every other song they played was total and utter cack, though.

Anyone else seen a band play the same song 3 times in one show?

Rick Spence (spencerman), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They played it twice when I saw them in Bournemouth in my first week at uni in 91.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Going back to the Would-Be's, the single was issued on a small Irish label at first on seven inch, then picked up by Decoy in the UK who issued it on 7 inch and 12 inch. I had the seven inch at the time, and found the 12 inch in a charity shop in Newport a few years ago. They issued a second single - "My radio sounds different in the dark" is a name that springs to mind - but the original female singer had left to return to school (wasn't she 15 when "IHEW" was issued?) and they kind of lost impetus during the time between the first and second single. Also the second single was nowhere near as good as the first. Oh hang on, "My radio.." was the third single, second single was "Silly songs for Cynical People".

But bloody hell, what a great song "IHEW" was. And the b-side too. Oddly enough, it appears on that Morrissey "Under the influence" compilation.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck you all, 'Dreamtime' is a great song, still! And I once knew a Greek DJ who had played in an indie band which supported the Heart Throbs once, in Athens I think.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i like "dreamtime". i like "i wonder why" more though

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

THe HeartThrobs (at least one of the sisters anyway) was a flatmate of a friend of mine. They got us all to go cheer them on their first gig proper, supporting Zodiac Mindwarp.

Only time I could honestly say "That's going to happen" from a first gig.

The title "Silly Songs For Cynical People" rings a distant bell. Is that the one you have Tom? I forgot they had changed singers. It was the first singer's song that did it alright. As I said, I'll have to play it when I get home the weekend.

First singer's voice I mean.

Sorry, mistakes all over -- meant to say above when I heard Pram a few years later in 1994 (not 1990) it reminded me of IHEW.

I think IHEW's high placing was down - rather like the Cuban Boys, Bang Bang Machine, etc in later years - to Peel's obsessive overplaying of it. There's (at least) one every year. I do like it though and I seem to remember Peel managing to nudge it onto Roundtable for consideration by the panel - favourable comparisons with Debbie Harry (the voice, not a concurrent DB single) were made.

I think the NME called it oompah-pop, and predicted it would be the only entry in the genre.

Obviously Peel still regarded the song as a classic, as he managed to get it into his Peelenium round up at the end of 1999.
