70. Shut Up & Dance, Vol. 2: The Best of Freestyle

kickitcricket, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt-- I guard my anonymity fiercely, so I won't name names; however, we weren't well-known, an early-90's indie band, had one record out on a major label subsidiary but that's as far as it went. Another time, another place.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Nom De Plume, that totally makes sense ... your "Pet Sounds" Cobain story.

I'm new on this board, but I'll share this nugget: I did a Cobain phone interview about two months before "Nevermind" hit stores. (So we were all still rather clueless of the magnitude of what was to come.) Anyway, I distinctly remember that Novoselic was listening to Madonna in the background. I commented, and when Cobain passed it on to Novoselic, he goofily screamed "We love pop!" Meanwhile, Cobain said (and I quote from the article): "I think it’s weird, but for some reason, people in the underground have denied pop for the last few years. I don’t understand that at all, because the Ramones were pop. The Sex Pistols were pop. So were The Clash and a lot of other bands. Fucking Black Flag is pop in a way. (But) We’re not on a major (label) and all of a sudden listening to Edie Brickell."

Musicians' favorites lists are almost always boring.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos w/ "your hard drive" masterstroke. Most awkward and embarrassing effort by an old-format magazine to insert itself into the modern context in years.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 18 December 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the first ever Nirvana/Cobain related thread (on any message board) that hasn't disappointed me.

billstevejim, Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the "your hard drive" thing a reference to?

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

that list is far from boring or dullardly!!

Aaron A., Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems, "Your Hard Drive" was Spin's #1 record of 2000, I think.
