Moloko - Sing it back (boris dlugosch mix)
De'lacy - Hideaway (deep dish mix)
Tori Amos - God (carl craig mix)

I could add a hundred more dance mixes, but instead...

Shania Twain - That don't impress me much (euro mix)
They remixed it for the european market with great result,
this is the far superior version.

Lumidee, Busta Rhymes & Fabolous - Never leave you (remix)
Obviously

Cornershop - Brimful of asha (norman cook mix)
Dull song turned into great indiepop

Jim Janse, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the single remix of Black Sheep's "The Choice Is Yours". It just has far more momentum than the album version.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Weatherall's remix of MBV's "Soon"

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

YES to DB.

NOOOOO to Geir.

(Ha, so all is right in the world.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lumidee original is much better! It's such a beautiful sparse song, and I like it best when it's just her involved.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The MBV Arkestra remix of Primal Scream's If they move, kill them.

The Weatherall remix of Soon is better than the original? I love Weatherall like a father and a son, but that would be his worst remix ever.

Jedmond, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Every single remix of "Born Slippy" pales when compared to the original, including the all-pervasive NUXX mix.

Andrew Weatherall's remix of MBV's "Soon"

hook me up. That song is so drowned out I find it hard to separate the bits and rearrange it even with a ginsu knife. I also don't like cupcakes that are cooked with lightbulbs.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, without getting into whether an opinion can actually be "right" or "wrong", I'm hardly the first person to prefer the Foul Play remix to the original. What is it that you prefer about the original? Or is there another remix you feel is superior?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Lexis - Hypotise (Autechre slow mix)

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, sorry about that, it's just that I knew someone was going to say that sooner or later and I was all ready to pounce.

There's a strong sense of space and pacing in the original that really appeals to me; the remix sounds too rushed and busy in comparison. Keep in mind I heard the remix first and loved it, THEN discovered the original and was all "WOAH THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER". Then _Haunted Science_ came out and I wanted to stab him in the neck for sucking so bad, but that's another story.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Austin - "Unity (In Dub)"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(Similar relationship between original and remix, but in the case of the Austin track the extra velocity/density turns it into a completely bonkers funhouse-gone-apeshit bonanza of breakbeat fury that dwarfs the original.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I too heard the original for the first time ages after first hearing the foul play remix. I agree that the original is a massive track, and the sense of space compared to the remix is what makes it work. But given the context in which I first heard the remix, "rushed and busy" weren't necessarily bad things. Was a pretty predictable answer though.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't agree with Brimful of Asha - he turned Jonathan Richman into Whigfield.
Yes to MBV Arkestra, also Loaded & King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown

bham, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

depeche mode - master and servants - ON-U sound reremix. this ltd 12" completely kicked me into touch. made me buy far too much ON-U sound records. stunning distorted white noise monster of a track.
in fact most remixes that Adrian Sherwood does are far better than the original version.
biased moi ? nah never ..

"Austin - "Unity (In Dub)"

There was an original? I adore "Unity (In Dub)" to bits!

More answers:

Latrelle - Dirty Girl ("Fame" Remix)
Angie Stone - Wish I Didn't Miss You Anymore (ubiquitous house mix)
All garage mixes of Sia
The Cure - Lullabye (extended mix)
Orbital - The Sinner (remix of "The Saint", and a totally underrated monster of a track)
Kristine W v Murk - Some Lovin' (Peter Rauhoeffer Mix)
Luomo - Tessio (Moonbootica Remix - superior to The Present Lover's album version)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

fischerspooner - Emerge (dave clarke mix)
Four tet - Paws (errrrr, Four Tet mix)

six years pass...

bump for 2010

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

Boards of Canda has some noteworthy ones:

Slag Boom Van Loom - Poppy Seed (Boards Of Canada Remix)
Slag Boom Van Loom - Poppy Seed (Reprise) (Boards Of Canada Remix)

These seem to be more like outright covers, but are credited as remixes. The melodies are SLBV's but feel so naturally Boards. Really amazing tracks, and I particularly love the reprise. It's so sunny

cLOUDDEAD - Dead Dogs Two (Boards Of Canada Remix)

So incredible. There's an incredible breakdown that lasts like eight bars that kills me every damn time, and the "A Day In the Life" ending is just the cherry on top of this red tendon sundae.

octobeard, Monday, 15 August 2016 03:41 (nine years ago)

Also their mix of Beck's Broken Drum. Just listened to the original for the first time and it's not half bad but I prefer the remix, it's richer and smoother, like drinking a caramel milkshake while weeping salt tears into the open cup.

chad valley of the shadow of death (ledge), Monday, 15 August 2016 14:48 (nine years ago)

global communication vs chapterhouse : the blood music remixes

despite having never heard the originals, i just knew that the remix album is the version that was for me.

mark e, Monday, 15 August 2016 14:55 (nine years ago)

Evan and Chan / Superpitcher

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 15 August 2016 22:03 (nine years ago)

Kate Bush-The Big Sky (12 inch "Meteorological Mix" with added didgerido)

beamish13, Monday, 15 August 2016 22:17 (nine years ago)

I know it was a big hit, but I loathe the Armand Van Helden remix of Tori Amos' "Professional Widow"
