I've got most of the big names down (Red House Painters, Low, Codeine, Bedhead, Idaho) just wondering what other similar bands are worth looking into?

also, the sunshine club, if you can find their albums.

Early Day Miners. Their debut Placer Found from 2000 is the benchmark, though Jefferson At Rest is nearly as majestic.

Ida, for all your precious sadcore needs.

*swoon* i heart Ida

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked them before they started making albums for their kids.

Avoid that one and the other one as well.

may pang (maypang), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked the song 'High School Dance Hit' by Rex. Its only tune I remember by them - I think they were slow-core-y.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

How does Xiu Xiu fit into all of this?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They're badcore.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadcore/slowcore is fine with me but treat it like a less patient Candyman and don't even say it in public at all. Imagine being in a record store and asking "where the new sadcore shit is." Even in mere nightmare I'd be so horrified I'd wake up and start reviewing what I did yesterday to make sure I didn't say that.

DarrensCoq, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oh, heh heh, thanks. You're not so bad yourself."
-
"Oh, you know, I work, I go to school."
-
"I like everything but I'm into sadcore these days, you know."
-
"Oh okay see you later! P-p-p...peace!"

DarrensCoq, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

do people ask for records by genre?

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really - they might, however, ask where a certain section is, or ask for albums that sound like certain things. "Something that sounds like The White Birch? Right this way..."

Idaho own every slowcore thread ever.

Schwingung (Damian), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The sparser Palace stuff--Days In The Wake, Arise, Therefore.

The One AM Radio is pretty good stuff; maybe not slow or reverbed enough, though. Kind've singer/songwriter-y, and only sometimes percussive.

Anything by Seam will be worth hearing--some is better than the rest, but I'm not sure the collective mind has reached a consensus on it yet.

Spokane

bogle, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

One great record that you ought to track down is the version of the Codeine song 'Pea' that appears on Bitch Magnet's Valmead single. I'm a little confused as to who is actually playing the song, it might even be Codeine themselves, I don't have it around to check any longer. Anyhow, it's a great deal more guitar-heavy than the version on the Frigid Stars CD.

One English band I always loved were Navigator who came from Norwich, and I guess were part of the same loose 1996-ish scene as bands like Gauge or some of those Bristol folk like Crescent or Movietone. Anyhow, I saw them play some amazingly intimate gigs, absolutely spellbinding live. There is an mp3 right here of their song 'A Little Astronomy'. The Slint influence is fairly obvious, and there's definitely some Tindersticks in there too, but heck, I love 'em.

The first Telstar Ponies record (In The Space of a Few Minutes) has some classic old-school slo-moments too, although it's generally not a quiet record by any stretch of the imagination. If you like The White Birch, you'll definitely find a lot to love about it.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick OTM with Navigator. I totally forgot that I had seen them play in Edinburgh years ago. A good memory so thank you.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Navigator track was nice. Reminds me quite a bit of Migala, less
the latter's Spanish accent.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

High recommendations for local (defunct) band Carissa's Wierd - like a cross between Low & Ida. Some MP3s on their last label site here. Would also recommend the first Tram, _Heavy Black Frame_, and perhaps the first Arco, though I don't play it much.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Coastal
Coldharbourstores
Hydroplane (sort of)

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Spokane's upcoming album, Measurement, sounds very good. What I'd heard of them before didn't leave much of an impression.

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I see what you mean about Migala, I've just been listening to the mp3 here. Nice, I'd never heard them before. Similar to that Navigator track but without the math-rock side to them.

Not really checked out much Tram other than a 7" which sounded quite a lot like The Czars. Any recommendations?

Curt: how are Coldharbourstores? I *think* I've seen the before supporting Piano Magic, but I don't think they made much of an impression at the time. What should I be looking for?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Tram-wise, the first, _Heavy Black Frame_, is my favorite. Mostly confessional broken-heart lyrics. The 7" was likely off this record. One of those downbeat albums that's easy to listen to in the daylight, like _Down Colorful Hill_. The second, _Frequently Asked Questions_ gets a few points deducted for including a Tim Buckley cover from a comp and a previous b-side, but still has some good tracks. It's AllMusic's pick of Tram's three. The third, I've played a few times, but it never locked in the way the first did. MP3 snippets of all three are available here. Enough at least to give a sense of like/dislike.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

tram's records seriously all sound exactly the same to me, but the first one was the first one I heard so it's the only one I ever feel like playing. My favorite song of "theirs" though is the the song he sings on the previous Piano Magic record (Writers).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, Coldharbourstores are like a strummy Slowdive/Mojave 3 with a bit of Robin Guthrie-type guitar atmospherics. The singer even sounds a lot like Neil Halstead. They have released just one album, More Than the Other, one 7" and a comp track or two that I know of. From the album, try "Long Ago", "No Such Thing" or "Hold".

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

coldharbourstores are good but there is something about that record that fatigues me (no and it isn't because it's slow, smart asses), it's something in the tone and production that, after about two songs, really wears my ears out. maybe it's overly compressed or something.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Slowcore plus monkeys!

Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia - bitter, ranting monkeys
Francoiz Breut - French-lyric monkeys
Elysian Fields - sex-death monkeys & jazz monkeys

four months pass...
i am relatively frightened that no one has mentioned american music club... they were instrumental in the movement's origins.

k. andrew, Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that's an arguable point

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

this is ilm. every point is an arguable point.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

well then i argue that it's hogwash that AMC were instrumental in the movement's origins.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Mark E (AMC) point record execs (at least 4AD) in path of Mark K (RHP). i could be wrong about that though. yes i could.

gallantseagull, Thursday, 22 April 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you could be but you aren't; eitzel gave the RHP demo to someone at 4ad, yes.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 22 April 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

alot of the stuff on the Tree Records "Post Marked Stamps" comp. is pretty good as far as slow/emo/hard/core goes (!)
