Of all the dull jazzfunk records out there it's hard to find the gems.
Here's some for a start...

1) Art ensemble of Chicago - Theme de yo-yo
2) Fuse one - In celebration of the human spirit
3) Harvey Mason - Till you take my love
4) John Klemmer - Brasilia
5) Funkanova - Wood, brass & steel

John Scofield - "Boozer"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

All the funk tunes on Larry Goldings 'Whatever It Takes' - Maceo, David Sanborn, and Joshua Redman on saxes. (!)

'Brown Funk (for Ray)' from Christian McBride's "A Family Affair" album. Greg Hutchinson could not be any more in the fuckin' pocket.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Also most of John Scofield's "Hand Jive" (the one with Eddie Harris) and "A Go Go".

Don't know if they're technically "jazzfunk", but Mandrill's records are pretty good.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Joshua Redman - Hide & Seek, Can't Dance

And Billy Cobham - Stratus, obv.

Wow, these records are all totally high school for me, and now I'm pulling some of them out.

A few suggestions:
1) For old school: Have you heard the MVP Records compilations called "Classic Jazz Funk"? I have volumes 1 and 3, and although they're inconsistent, there's some pretty great stuff on there, too. (I found the inclusion of the Brothers Johnson's "Strawberry Letter 23" odd as hell considering that it has, like, zero jazz influence ... but I really do dig the song.)
2) If you include ass-shaking boogaloo in your jazz/funk catalog, the Greyboy Allstars' stuff is amazing. Not exactly jazz, but so damn funky. Their first two albums are fantastic.
3) Karl Denson's solo stuff isn't quite as good, but I did get caught up enough in his last studio effort to write a rather gushing review ... then lose interest in it two months later. Be warned: He sings on it.

if you're just going for songs i'd suggest (most of these are v recognizable hip hop samples):

Reuben Wilson's cover of "Inner City Blues"
Freddie Hubbard "Red Clay" (or Jack Wilkens' cover of it)
Dennis Coffey "Scorpio"
Blackbyrds "Rock Creek Park"
Donald Byrd "Think Twice" , "Wind Parade"
Bobby Humphrey "Harlem River Drive" , "Black & Blues"
Lonnie Liston Smith "Devika (Goddess)"

i'm not really good with song titles. i'll come back later with some record suggestions

Prince: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

If only this song was about a threesome (as it would have been 10 years), and not about how women have to accpet the importance of god in his life -which is just plain disgusting.

Compared To What - Les McCann & Eddie Harris (if that counts...)
(Falling Like) Dominoes - Donald Byrd
Moonshadow - Labelle (cover version brings out the best in the song)

The Clarke/Duke Project "Wild Dog"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Headhunters' Survival Of The Fittest is a jazz/funk pinnacle. Tough reissue to find (Scorpio booted the vinyl a few years ago and AFAIK the CD was issued only in France and Japan) but "God Made Me Funky" seems to be all over those comps.

Basically every non-ballad Earth, Wind & Fire tune to thread.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Lonnie Liston Smith - Astral Travelling
Stanley Turrentine - Sugar
Donald Byrd - Mis Kane
Idris Muhammed - Piece of Mind
Herbie Hancock - People Music (or most of his 70s catalog)
Grant Green - Sookie Sookie
Roy Hargrove's new album HardGroove

iiitone (King Kobra), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)
