TS: Alice Cooper Vs. Kiss

A lot of similarities here. Both were from Detroit, both played hard rock, both had a lot of really young fans and a "cartoon-like" stage act, Bob Ezrin has been involved with both.

But who is the better one? Personally, I certainly go for Alice Cooper, as most of his early to mid 70s albums are classics while Kiss' only truly classic album was "Destroyer".

Alice Cooper, because he has a few nice songs.
Kiss is just rubbish.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

KISS weren't from Detroit

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice Cooper on KISS (rough paraphrase): "I heard that Kiss had some comic books made about them with their blood mixed in the ink. I'd do the same -- have some comic books made about me with all their blood mixed in the ink."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Both were from Detroit,

:::sigh:::::

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Such a statement would normally make me go completely supernova, but I don't have it in me today. Morever, Alice Cooper was originally from Arizona, but moved to Detroit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

only truly classic album was "Destroyer".

How can you not "give props" (as they used to say) to Dressed to Kill. You hurt me so deeply in my heart that I must go fetch some Rolaids.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd give more props to the underrated and misunderstood "The Elder".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You should be buried alive for that comment.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice has so many better songs than Kiss.. But both of them were yesterday's news by 1978.

But who's a bigger moron? Gene Simmons or Kane Roberts?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You should be buried alive for that comment.

yikes!

Um...I think that Kiss has some pretty good albums besides Destroyer....Hotter Than Hell....I don't even mind some of the non-make-up ones like Animalize and the underrated sad pop metal album Asylum.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice the man was actually born in Detroit. But the band formed in Phoenix, yeah. Or that Phoenix suburb I can't remember the name of. Blount knows.

Sorry Alex, I don't often get the chance to be a pedant.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

is it tempe?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I thought you mentioned it on some other Alice thread. Maybe it wasn't you.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i may have! my memory's for shit!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm pretty sure i mention on every alice cooper thread how incredibly kickass that clip of 'i'm eightteen' vh1classicks shows so i'll just do so again right here

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda thought all the Kiss records up until and including (but not all of) the solo albums had some merit to them. Then again, I've only regularly listened to some of the hits of each of the records, so there you go.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice Cooper records are all pretty damn great up until and including "Welcome To My Nightmare".

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And if KISS's appropriation of Alice Cooper's schtick wasn't enough, along came a fellow named Marilyn Manson.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Billion Dollar Babies. That's almost all I know about Alice Cooper. My friend Mike duped onto the b-side of a Sex Pistols cassette he made me when we were in Gr. 7 or 8.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

For a start, I love both Kiss and Alice Cooper, but beyond the obvious (make-up, blood, theatrics), I don't really think they have all that much in common. Alice Cooper never really aspired to be heavy in the way Kiss attempted (though by later standards, Kiss aren't really all that heavy either). I don't know. I think I'm splitting hairs. I certainly don't think they sound particularly alike.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly, they probably sound more alike in their, ahem, "lesser/later" years than they did in their classic years, surely. But as far as the whole make-up/stage persona goes, I can still understand Cooper getting a might pissed at Kiss for aping parts of his (hence the brilliant paraphrased quote from Ned above)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

True. Alice Cooper had every right to say: "WTF?"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Billion Dollar Babies" was my favorite album when I was 11. None of Kiss's albums has ever been a favorite of mine. But their shoes are pretty cool.

Alex is right. They really don't sound alike. And they dress up as different comic book characters. Kiss is totally DC, while Alice Cooper is Marvel.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But their shoes are pretty cool.

Hahahahahahahahaha

. Kiss is totally DC, while Alice Cooper is Marvel.

I'm sure Gene would take strenuous exception to that, but it reamins a highly insightful comment, Mr.Pink.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

that is pretty dead on

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice Cooper, definitely.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice Cooper would win this on the basis of *Flush the Fashion*, *Easy Action,* or *Pretties for You* alone. And those may well be his sixth, seventh, and eighth best albums; I'd have to go back and check.

chuck, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, Alice's new album is the most consistently tuneful and witty one he's made since *Flush the Fashion* in 1980, when he had a new wave haircut. Seemingly he wants to be a garage band again instead of a metal dork, and that inspired him to write actual songs with hooks and funny words in them for the first time in years. (And no, when people were saying good things to me about the record for months, I didn't believe them, either. Which is why it took me so long to put the CD on. But those people weren't lying.)

chuck, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a HUGE Alice fan, when I was a kid. Even now, though I enjoy KISS, I've never really got on that wagon. Never even saw KISS. I wish I would have but now that I know that Gene is such a putz, I'm glad I never gave them any of my $$. I won the first record, at age 12 or so, it's been played twice.
It's great tha AC has a decent record out. I'll check it out today. Hope it makes a good Christmas morning wake-up for the neighbors.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"that AC" oooooo, hungover, I'm going skiing now.
