ok, so crunk + bounce is like, totally slow, right? notwithstanding the screwed stuff. at least, at lot slower than hip hop has got in general upo until this stuff started coming out. anyway thtas how it appears to me.
in parallel, garage has slowed down to become grime, having sped up to a peak in 2001/2002. like, its slowed down dramatically, almost to hip hop levels....
so what does this mean? is this some depressive/millenial-angst-come- late/downturn sort of psychological shift? does slowness equate with the end-of-the-party mood?
it seems weird how (especially) dance music seems to go through these patches of tempo change, like some sort of push and pull force. do other genres do this? whats the general musical overview tempo? has everything become relatively slow?
i find it weird because i sort of dont like crunk/bounce, mainly because of its slowness, and although i love the idea of screwed music, i find it too out there for me. in a way, i cant really deal with it (although i spend shitloads on vinyl), again its the speed that holds me back. on the other hand, i got into house by listening to the old stuff, where it was way slower, and more kind...'funky' (aaaarghh), so tempo is pretty problematic for me.
anyway, just wondered if anyone had comments about the significance of these sort of overarching tempo shifts (unless im totally overstating the case here....)

No way! The 'slow tempos' of crunk and bounce allow for way more syncopation and faster double time within the main pulse, both in the beats and the rapping. It's got that great two-feels-at-once thing going on.

yeah i mean, i like the syncopation, but it doesnt move me, like, physically. similarly, how do you dance to jammer 'take em out'?

it depends on how you hear the tempo, ambrose. i hear bounce as very fast, a touch faster than house tempo, more like techno... for instance "southern hospitality" or "shorty swing my way" or "project chick"... i guess you could interpret them as slow if you imagine the main beat happening at 1/2 speed, but as soon as i try and dance to them i start boppin around.
