Which acts haven't made any albums really worth owning, but have put out GREAT best ofs/greatest hits?

too many

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

One could argue that this is the best of:

Assuming that one on the bottom there stays injury-free.

BIG assumption

This thread may be of interest.

I'm going to assume that the Cubs will sign Vlad Guerrero and A SERIES TITLE IS IN OUR GRASP

Pedants might furiously cite that this as a singles compilation and not an official "best of...", but it still kicks a giant platter of ass in either category.

As far as legitimate Best Ofs go,....if I can't choose the above, I'd go with...

Except "Entertainment!" is a great album. And "Solid Gold" and "Songs of the Free" are real good ones.

Oops. I misunderstood this thread. I thought it was just asking for great Best Ofs. Gang of Four, then, should be disqualified. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Re: Singles Going Steady - this is a *really* geeky question, but I wondered what that thing is on the floor in front of Pete Shelley on the cover photo. Looks like one of the Residents has lost a contact lens or something. Anyone know what it is? Part of the drum perhaps?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

a fuzz pedal?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim OTM. No one expected me to say that, did they?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I assumed too, but it looks like there aren't any cables actually plugged into it.

x-post

Motown pre-"What's Goin' On" to thread!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"Another Music In a Different Kitchen" is too good for Buzzcocks to deserve a mention here.

I'd say few post-1967 acts have lasted long enough to fill a decent "Best Of" without also putting out at least a few good albums. Personally, other than 60s Motown which I have already mentioned, I would say Buddy Holly and Sam Cooke are the most obvious choices here. Neither ever made a good album, but "Best Ofs" by both would belong in most collectors' record collections.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Petty has Wildflowers, he shouldn't be here.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Petty has released at least three excellent albums. Certainly doesn't belong in this thread.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The two Cure greatest hits records are the only Cure albums I will ever need. Actually, I could just go with the Galore one and that's good enough.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Martha and the Vandellas "Anthology"

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The two Cure greatest hits records are the only Cure albums I will ever need.

No, they aren't!

Everly Brothers, The Left Banke and The Four Seasons to thread though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shadows also deserve a mention.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

RE: that thing in front of Pete Shelley, I always thought it was some piece from the drum kit.
