Is it just me or does it seem weird that there's so much proprog sentiment in the latest V. Voice?

has dave q written another review then?

it makes total sense for them to be proglove - poor d caught up to the yanks in the series and it ain't like their offseason moves have really done that much to address it

It's Chuck Eddy's Licks column and Tad Hendrickson's review of some kind of annual progfest.

By the way, I don't mean to instigate another pro/anti-prog debate. I'm genuinely curious about whether anyone else thinks it's weird for prog to be brought up twice in one week in the Voice, since it's so commonly consigned as wack and the Voice is a tastemaker, or at least a barometer for taste.

the voice seems to be reviewing all kinds of wierd, uncharacteristic stuff these days that I've never heard of...I think it's cool....certainly a change of pace.

As an intern with the Village Voice, I must state without equivocation that I am antiglove.

(As an intern with the Village Voice, Joseph, you appear also quite a punner.)

this is hardly the first time there's been 'pro-prog sentiment'! also nightfist sounds like the best band ever!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

smell the proglove!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

But Geeta, so much proglove. I mean a little here and there's no big thing. But to see a band compared to Happy the Man, and then go to another article all about progmetal, is surreal.

Antiglover, is Chistgau on vacation, is that what this is about?

The secret truth is that every music journalist has a hidden stash of prog knowledge, all of which they are doomed never to repeat. However, it manages to break through every now and then. I say the holidays are to blame.

Damn, I was really flattered by this thread, and hoped it was gonna go on forever! Oh well. This is hardly the first time we've covered prog-rock, I think (matter of fact, the first piece I ever wrote for the Voice, a review of Bad Religion's *Into the Unknown*, was about growing up on prog in the '70s!), and two very short pieces among a music section full of Al Green and Missy and Kinky and jazz hardly strikes me as *that* odd, but what the hell....Also not sure when we DIDN'T cover "all kinds of weird, uncharacteristic stuff ," but I'm glad Matt H. likes what we're covering now, and I wonder what records specifically he's referring to, and whether he's seeked any of them out and listened to them or anything like that. Anyway, here's my prog-happy Licks column referred to above, if you wanna read it:

I just like having stuff like Merle Haggard and Toby Keith, which you wouldn't normally see in an alt-weekly, covered. That's a big thing; everyone complains that rock crit is too indie rock focus and should do more rap, but I think that country (which is pretty much on par popularity wise with either rock or rap) is the genre that traditionally gets the short end of the stick.

Also even some of the more adult comtempo stuff like Ricky Lee Jones and Bacarach Meets Isley....I had never heard of Metal Urbain until that review, which I am planning to buy but I dont' think it's out. Also the Bottle Rockets, who I didn't know were still around....there's been a few metal/prog type things that I've never heard about that I'm curious...also like the love for Black Eyed Snakes, who are pretty minor but great....

Just basically I like seeing alot of wierd stuff juxtaposed - like Ying Yang Twins, Black Eyed Snakes, and Animal Collective....
