"Not a weak track to be found"

Does anyone have any albums they'd consider perfect? I mean, every note of every song? Like, you can't put a song from it on a mixtape because you don't want to break up the record? Be very strict and think before you answer. The only album I can think of, after two days of thinking (not constantly, but, you know, on the toilet and stuff) is After the Goldrush.

BONUS points if you can name an ARTIST who is without flaw. I'm talkin' no "She's Electric," no "Rocky Raccoon"...NOTHING in the canon that you wouldn't wanna hear in any given situation.

single album : robert wyatt - rock bottom

never a dull moment?? i think that's impossible

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk. Perfection from start to finish. Not a bum track, nor a bum note, nor a moment wasted.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's Next
Alien Lanes
Tonight's the Night
Fun House
I'd be surprised if anyone could think of a perfect band.

otto, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

galaxie 500 "this is our music"

(i hope i don't need to restate that this is my opinion and don't expect anyone to share it)

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah. The only thing on that record I like is the Yoko cover (that WAS that record, right?)

Whos' Next I won't comment on because I don't like The Who.

I considered Alien Lanes, but I don't like a few songs on there. Ditto for Bee Thousand (never got the fascination with "Hot Freaks")

Tonights the Night, Fun House and Spirit of Eden are all good choices, tho I can't remember the last time I actually pulled Fun House out and listened to it.

some prog :

Univers Zero - "Heresie"
Magma - "Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh"

"Spirit Of Eden", definitely. Also Neil Young - "On The Beach", although I'm wavering a bit on "Vampire Blues".

sam bloch, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"sad skinhead" totally WORKS in the context of the record, though, and it shows that even though they were german they had a sense of humor, however corny it may be. it also has cool treated vocals.

yetimike (McGonigal), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Predictably enough, "Loveless" is the only album I feel this strongly about.

how could i forget loveless on my list???
that's like counting up all the people in the room and forgetting yourself. i love that album so much i'm tempted to put rafael toral's "wave field" on as well!

loveless gets big big thumbs down for "touched"

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Skylarking" has no weak tracks.

Roxy Music - Siren
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Naughty Boys
Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids
Magazine - The Correct Use of Soap

All perfect to me. 'Tin Drum' would be perfect if not for "Ghosts," which disrupts things.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Comsat Angels - Sleep No More. Oh, I'll definitely put a song on a mix, I don't think it's unbreakupable like Spirit of Eden (besides, isn't that a different question anyway?), but there's not a wasted moment on the record.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Modern Lovers - st'd

Hands down perfect.

REM, Murmur
The Jesus Lizard, Goat
Van Morrison, Astral Weeks
Van Morrison, Veedon Fleece
The Clash, London Calling
Elvis Costello, This Year's Model
John Coltrane, Coltrane's Sound
Pere Ubu, Dub Housing
Talking Heads, More Songs About Buildings and Food
Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited
Common Sense, Resurrection
Nas, Illmatic

Granted, I wouldn't want to hear any of those "in any given situation." But that's a dozen albums, none of which have a single weak track anywhere on them.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

And replace theat Coltrane album with the one of your choice. Many of them could be considered flawless.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Star, Radio City
Fugazi, Red Medicine

With Coltrane, I'd go more for Crescent or A Love Supreme [not that ColtraneSound isn't great!]

usual channels, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all a bit relative, though, innit? I mean, "weak" is really in the ear of the listener. For example, as much as I love Blue Lines by Massive Attack (and I do), I'd hardly call, say, "Hymn of the Big Wheel" flawless.

pete s, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all a bit relative, though, innit? I mean, "weak" is really in the ear of the listener.

True. I'm operating along the lines of 'every song that comes on in order I am happy to hear it and don't want to hear a different song instead', which isn't really the same as 'no (objectively) weak tracks'. I'm critical enough that I could find some flaw in any record, so I couldn't ever satisfy this standard with my own listening ear.

webcrack (music=crack), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Murder by Death's new CD, if "I have to force myself to use a different CD as a palate cleanser/burnout preventer between listens" can be part of the standard here... though maybe I should wait till the thing's cooled in my bowels for a few months before I say something like that? Also A Different Class seconded. Or wait... actually maybe Pulp's last album is more... eh... I'm too tired to make up my mind...

I'm noticing that a lot of these albums just don't have weak tracks on them because all the songs sound near identical to one another. If you like one, chances are you're going to like them all.

You might have had an argument if you'd suggested stopping after F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E, but as it stands... asshat.

nickalicious: There is filler on Deltron, in fairness. New Coke, for example.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah I forgot about that. And the Paul Barman "I keep my dreadlocks in a napkin ring" bit too. They actually don't really interfere with the progression of the album so much though I think as they just seem really out of place in the story. Like, expat-mech-pilot-goes-underground-MC-rebel-alliance-oh-wait-here's-Money-Mark-talking-like-an-old-man-okay-back-to-it-then. It's like those side games in Final Fantasy or something.

I agree that this may be nothing more than an exercise in futility but, mine are better. I agree with oops on Expensive Shit (how couldn't you?) and nickalicious with some of the Miles Davis catalogue but the rest of you guys...

Natty Dread -- Bob Marley & The Wailers
Honky Tonk Heroes -- Waylon Jennings
Bye Bye Blackbird -- Keith Jarrett
Muswell Hillbillies -- The Kinks
Nashville Skyline -- Bob Dylan
Coney Island Baby -- Lou Reed
New Day Rising -- Hüsker Dü

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ghosts" is of course the most beautiful thing David Sylvian has ever been involved with. So if "Tin Drum" is not perfect (it is close IMO), then "Ghost" is definitely not the reason why.

Dylan-Blood on the Tracks
Zappa-Waka/Jawaka
Zevon-Excitable Boy
Weather Report-Mysterious Traveller
Elvis Costello-Imperial Bedroom
Led Zeppelin-House of the Holy

Terribly mainstream, I suppose

Dave Vinson (Gaughin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Blood on the Tracks may not have a weak track in an absolute sense, but relatively speaking, "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts", stands out as an obvious contender for that title. Also, Highway 61 Revisited has "Queen Jane Approximately", which again, though not a bad song, isn't quite up to the level of the others on the album. I might be willing to grant Nashville Skyline though.

How often do you listen to "The Gift," A Nairn?

otto, Thursday, 18 December 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots, that's a classic. The story with it's the uneasy feeling at the end, and John Cales delivery, do I even need to defend it?

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 18 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, yeah. How many times can you hear that song before it gets old? I have better things to do with eight minutes of my life than listen to John Cale read a Lou Reed short story. Maybe it was daring in 1968, but now it's just annoying. You find out the ending, and then maybe you listen to it two or three more times, and then skip it forever after. That said, the rest of the album's not bad.

otto, Thursday, 18 December 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, that sounds a little harsh. I have a tendency to be hard on the Velvet Underground since I've been told my whole life how great they are. It's the punk in me. And I really don't have better things to do with my life than listen to "The Gift," at least not all the time.
