Goodnight Ladies - Lou Reed

I'm pretty sure that's a tuba.

It's shit, btw.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Me to thread!

Rebirth Brass Band
Youngblood Brass Band for some stuff that has never been done on tuba before now.
Louisiana Music Factory for all the other brass and New Orleans trad bands with tubas.

Also Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, Arthur Blythe's trio albums with tuba, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Drums and Tuba!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Romanian Gypsy Horns -- that album "Fanfare Ciocarila" totally rocks

yetimike (McGonigal), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell You Today by Loose Joints owns this tread.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, probably.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Want to see the Bright lights tonight" by Richard and Linda Thompson, on the album of the same name.

pete s, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, probably. -- may pang

Definitely -- Scott from the Gerbils plays tuba on there, and did in concert on tour for "Aeroplane."

yetimike (McGonigal), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

beach boys - "wake the world"

haha i already own 75 percent of this! :-)

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And the stuff Bill Barber was on, Coltrane's Africa/Brass, Birth of the Cool, etc, though that stuff doesn't have tuba basslines or anything.

Sotta Voce is a tuba quartet that switches it up.

I should have mentioned the Soul Rebels Brass Band above for more of hip-hop thing.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of the early World/Inferno Friendship Society stuff has tuba rather than bass. I like "Our Candidate" a lot.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Early-ish Magnetic Fields, like "Jeremy" and "Sad Little Moon."

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Goran Bregovic's "Ederlezi" (the song not the compilation)

(Jon L), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping this was about the magazine.

hstencil, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping this was about the magazine.

Me too. A very fun read.

Oh well: Bruce Springsteen: "Wild Billy's Circus Story."

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping this was about the magazine.

if it helps, the magazine was my inspiration for the thread title.

Wintermuté (Wintermute), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The live version of "Rag Mama Rag" from the Band's "Rock of Ages" has a great tuba solo from Howard Johnson.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Millennium - "Prelude"
Randy Newman - "Lonely at the Top"

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of Arthur Blythe, I saw his trio at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Tompkins Square Park this year. It was just him, a tuba player, and a drummer. They were awesome. Funky, danceable breakbeats with tuba basslines and Blythe blowing sax over the top. The crowd was eating it up.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's awesome. I'd love to see him live, I'm glad he's still doing the tuba trio.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

voodo~Dirty Dozen Brass Band. the tuba is the lead i think.

Michel Godard's Castel Del Monte alb. has loads of top-notch tuba as well as a fine share of good songs :)

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Howard Johnson's Gravity is an amazing 6-tuba ensemble--they play on a live Taj Mahal album, too.

And Air's "Ce Matin La" has a lovely tuba solo.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

my neighbor to thread.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't some Beefheart songs have tuba, like "Harry Irene", maybe?

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Any more for any more? My son's learning the euphonium and loves to hear tuba-like noises on records that aren't classical.

Anything by Tuba Skinny. I especially like last year's Six Feet Down. Old-timey New Orleans gutbucket blues.

o. nate, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

I was lucky to see them play Royal Street in New Orleans last month. Wish they'd play the East Coast.
