ha ha you write about music for a living - 100% music nerd

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

what if you write about real estate, are you a real estate nerd?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

God, it's too long for me to keep my attention on it, but the way it was going, I'm thinking yes, I qualify. But couldn't we have guessed that from the fact that I'm here at all?

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I got something like 39%. Yes, we're all nerds, but at this level it's the little things, like going through a venue's trash after the show in the hopes of finding a setlist, that make all the difference.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, dom's right...a lot of these questions just read like another language to me...do people really collect set lists and ticket stubs after the age of 16?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. I still collect ticket stubs, I like them as a reminder of shows I've enjoyed. Even moreso now that I don't go to many shows any more. They're more special now.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I got 60.something% but went back to change some answers on reflection deciding that I wasn't embarassed to admit anything in the "things you hate to admit you like" bit and wondering if this made me more or less nerdy. Except I hit the reset instead of rank button and lost them all. And I really can't be arsed going through it all again.

When I think about it most of the set-lists I've accumulated are from shows where a band I was in performed though.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I took it yesterday and got a 72.9-something-somthing%, which makes me an extreme music nerd...but I already knew that. I was shooting for "hardcore," though.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

47.something. I kind of resented the "ashamed to admit you like it" question. Damnit, I do like Yoko Ono and I'm not a bit ashamed to admit it. So how do I answer the question?

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there's lots of those. Like, I'd have scored higher if I'd clicked on the things I knew I was supposed to click on, but to do that, I'd be admitting to being a little stupid. They should give you a *higher* score for not wondering what a "Duran" is, not lower. Because as we all know, nobody need ever give a fuck what a "Duran" is.

I got 70%, BTW. Extreme.

"I want To stop music censorship"
What music censorship?
Last time I checked freaking Anal Cunt albums were still widely available.

Not done filling it out yet, but I suppose I won't get a high score, as crap like memorabilia and meeting musicians has no interest to me.
We'll see, i suppose..

Ahh, xpost got this unposted, so here's my result as well:

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I scored just a hair over 57%. What this test failed to take into account:

1) I am proud of my ability to connect myself with various music stars through degrees of separation (my brother knows Freddy Fresh, who in turn has recorded with Fatboy Slim, BDP, Grandmaster Flash, et al)
2) I have directly angered rock stars through negative reviews
2.5) In one case, it was a negative review of the band that opened for him
3) I not only collect ticket stubs, but tape them to my refigerator
3.5) This includes an autographed Mike Watt stub
3.75) ...from a show where I gave him $5 for a sticker I later learned was free
3.9) I actually tell people about the time I gave Mike Watt $5 for nothing as though it were something to brag about

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I had all the same questions as Michael. What kind of music nerd "secretly" likes anything? Especially Abba and Keith Richard. I thought it was a trick category so I didn't check any of them. Although I like all of them except Limp Bizkit and Creed.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I got just above 70 per cent, making me an Extreme Music Nerd, but I had trouble with some of the questions.
For example, I thought Herman Melville was Moby's great-great uncle, not his grandfather. So I couldn't, in good conscience, indicate that I knew that, which skewed my results. I could have been .074 per cent more of a music geek.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 18 December 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

And wouldn't better artist-specific questions be things like, "I can name the four bands on No New York" and "I know what country Les Rallizes Denudes were from"? (I guess those questions privilege a certain kind of music nerd - but they seem more relevant than how many episodes of "I Love the '70s" you've watched.)

That Thomas Dolby invented "Dolby Surround Sound"

I actually thought that he didn't, and that they tried to get him to stop using 'Dolby' as his surname? Oh dear, I am a total nerd for knowing that - if it's true of course.

He didn't, Music Mole. Dolby's a nickname he got from his classmates. His real name's Thomas Morgan Robertson. And Herman Melville's a great uncle of Moby's, not his grandfather. It is a bad sign to be correcting a music nerd test.

otto, Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

eh, seems like you got a lot of points for tv watching. and the trivia was not nerdy enough. there's nothing worse than a quiz that has wrong questions+answers on it. my other big pet peeve is a test with an obvious game quality, ie "the more checkboxes you click, the higher the score." there should be checkboxes that deduct when you click them, etc. if we have to go throught the effort of filling such a long quiz out, why can't you go through the effort of designing a more effective quiz?

(it's obvious i'm more than just a music nerd i suppose. quiz nerd?)

75.84541% - Hardcore Music Nerd

I think because I used to watch a ton of TV and I "secretly like" 95% of the things on that part of the list. I don't even consider myself that much of a music nerd.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't do polls but here's something I noticed about music nerddom - true music nerddom can make music become as much a life obstacle as a life necessity. I sacrifice a lot of conversations when my earphones are on, I rudely drift off and involutarily hum a tune during conversations*, and experience an in-car agoraphobia. I'm off to run an errand but I get so comfortable in my little bass coccoon that I make the route twice as circuitous, and when I'm near home, I'll circle the block a few times until my song ends, which opens up another stupid can of worms where you're thinking, "am I avoiding my own house? Isn't that a sign of depression?"

*- do any guys out there involuntarily MOAN when talking to girls? "EeeuugGGHHHH" "Pardon?" "Sorry, just tired."

DarrensCoq (DarrenK), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

rah Kate! though I'm willing to bet I'd get a higher score if I'd bothered answering the "guilty pleasures" category instead of ignoring it on principle.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

*- do any guys out there involuntarily MOAN when talking to girls? "EeeuugGGHHHH" "Pardon?" "Sorry, just tired."

the wife tends to be a little oversensitive to my sighing. i mean, sometimes i just gotta freakin breathe, ya know? sighing just sort of happens. doesn't mean i'm pissed automagically or something.

i know musician nerddom often leads to dudes playin solos on the edge of their beds while their girls sit next to them thinking, "god, when is he gonna be done? i'm horny for crying out loud!"

i think any nerddom can lead to social suffering... in fact, who can attest to being afflicted with hobbit nerds lately? i sure can. work is overflowing with them from angles i never would've imagined. "he's quoting frodo? i didn't know he could read. why is he giving me a hard time for not seeing the movie on opening night?"

seven years pass...

Over the weekend, I stayed at a campsite in Wisconsin. On Sunday morning, someone was walking around the campsite at like 8am playing the bagpipe. It was far away, and I could barely hear it, so it wasn't obnoxious or anything. Instead, it was really ~spooky~ and beautiful and I remembered how much I like the droney sound of the bagpipe. So today, with a little free time this morning, I wondered whether or not there is such a thing as experimental bagpipe music. You know, I like the sound of the instrument, but I want it to be less distracting/trad sounding.

I googled "avante garde bagpipe music" and the first result is http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandjazzmusic/3668768/A-haven-for-lovers-of-avant-garde-bagpipe-music.html

I think this means that I passed the test, but who knows. It was kind of disappointing because I can't say that I really found what I was looking for :-/
