UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA REWARDS PURETRACKS CUSTOMERS
WITH UNLIMITED BURNING RESTRICTIONS
Universal Music Canada and Puretracks today announced that Canadian customers buying Universal tracks will no
longer be subject to burning restrictions.
Said, Graham Henderson, Senior Vice President for Business Affairs and e Commerce Universal Music Canada,
"Music fans who are buying music from a legal site such as Puretracks have chosen to honour the integrity of
artists and the music they make. And, in time for Christmas, Universal has a present for these fans."
Starting today, when Canadian fans buy Universal tracks at Puretracks, they will not be subject to a restriction on
the number of personal copies they are entitled to burn. Previously customers were restricted to 3 burns per title.
Universal is making this move on a trial basis.
Said Henderson, "We want to reward customers who buy downloads with our TRUST. We are going to trust that
when they make copies they will only make them for PERSONAL use and in reasonable quantities. If your friend
likes the music you are playing, then she or he should BUY it."
The Universal announcement comes on the heels of notice from the Canadian Recording Industry Association
(CRIA) that lawsuits against individuals who are uploading music files through illegal services such as KaZaA are
just around the corner. This is a move which is supported by a majority of Canadians according to a recent poll
undertaken by POLLARA on behalf of CRIA.
Universal believes that they have by now addressed virtually all of the music consumer's major issues: burnability,
portability, selection, file quality, and the right to buy songs 'a la carte' at reasonable prices.
