She almost ruined Buck Whylin'. Almost.

Manual Gottbling (Andy K), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

man, Buck Whylin was great...

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The album cover of her first record, which is basically her with a look of awkward fright, anger, and rage holding a dead black child in her arms is up there with the Geto Boy's "We Can't Be Stopped".

But man, you can make rockin' mash-up mincement out of her a cappellas.

And I think she's quite attractive.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, here's a formal All Music review of her album.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't she say "WE ARE AT WAR!" in a really shrill manner...that would make a good sample.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul, you have got to be kidding.
But I know you're not.

As far as I'm concerned, Sistah Souljah was a shrill, pedantic voice who only got the attention she did because she was a hanger-on of Public Enemy at the time (of course, the presidential election sure did help). Musically? Useless. Interestingly, however, I just recently saw that Will & Jada optioned one of her novels for the big screen (apparently she's a big black bestseller with her fiction)...

I used to think she was the most irritating, damaging high-profile Black woman in America. Then I read The Isis Papers and realized that Sistah Souljah wasn't nearly as bad as she could be.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean, honestly, if you're going to publish a serious theory about the systematic oppression of black people by white people, would it hurt you to a) finish your arguments, b) not use circular logic, and c) use a spell checker?)

T/S: Sistah Souljah vs. Professor Griff

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Griff is fucking Ezra Pound compared to the Sistah. And "Pawns in the Game" is still pretty def

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 18 December 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

damn! Pawns in the Game was a good single!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, consider this may be the first time this sentence has ever been written re: Sistah Souljah....history in the making!

Also, please note that, even though it was posted using my real name and email address (which I abandoned on ILM long ago), it is NOT me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 18 December 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the deal with her? Is she, like, some huge Black racist?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 18 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we all know that MC Halfpint obliterates Souljah.
