Hey,
apart from KLF burning their money, Michael Jackson erecting statues of himself and Britney/Madonna's making out on stage - WHAT ARE THE WORLD'S BIGGEST MEDIA STUNTS IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS?

The Sex Pistols

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think all the MJ scandals come directly from his record label. Every time he does anything remotely weird, out pops another greatest hits package or reissue.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i think MJ is perfectly capable of concocting his own scandals without help from his record label. you don't think it was sony music that put him up to claiming that tommy mottola is the devil, do you?

The greatest was Anton rollerskating around protesting the Dandy Warhols at CMJ. That whole thing was just silly.

Didn't a guy from the Dwarves try to fake a story about his own death?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And man did his record label get pissed at him.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that so? Did he try to fake his own death?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they leaked a story that got picked up in the press about him being dead (I think his name was Hewhocannotbenamed), and then had to come out and say it was fake...I think they got dropped....I don't think any kind of fake death was actually staged though, it was more just a planted rumor.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, GG Allin and his repeated threatening to commit suicide onstage/subsequent chickenings out was a high point of tasteless publicity r n r stunts.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And man did his record label get pissed at him.

I thought that was the point. That they wanted out of their deal.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Negativland:

From another website: "When a 1988 tour had to be canceled for financial reasons, Negativland issued a spurious press release, attributing the cancellation to a request by federal officials to stay put until a non-spurious Minnesota ax murder was cleared up. The press release insinuated that "Christianity is Stupid" played into the reason why the suspect murdered his family, and many a media outlet reported this link. The coup de grâce came when a California television station reported on the Negativland-ax murder connection as the lead story on a news broadcast. Negativland regurgitated these misshapen media reports into a brilliant collage entitled Helter Stupid".

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That is stupid.

Sam J. (samjeff), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Church of Kurt Cobain was pretty funny. Does anyone else remember that?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

In the seventies, there was a fading Finnish rock star who also faked his suicide to get media attention. He had supposedly drowned himself, but the body was of course never found. The tabloids ran big stories about it, until he was discovered hiding in a country lodge. He had to pay a big fine for misleading the police etc. The incident didn't even reboost his record sales...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What the fuck?!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a big media furore about this when they toured europe at the time of their first album, er, er,...e.rr....(mind goes blank) the one w/the crashed aeroplane on it (Im even have it at home) According to the oh-so-truthful british tabloid press, the beasties were introduced to a bunch of disabled kids in switzerland, and they laughed and pointed etc. IIRC, the brit tabloid press made the story up, uncharacteristically. The end.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jarvis Cocker/MJ incident was good one.

Air Mack, Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Having completed his Best Of thing, Luke Haines sent copies of Lenny Valentino to a load of magazines and radio stations with a blurb saying it was the debut single of a gay swedish boyband (or something like that) called Valentino, and that they were rapidly becoming notorious for their sexually explicit antics on and offstage. Some of them actually believed it, apparently.

Pink Puzz!!

It was the late sixties, see. And boyband Paul Revere and the Raiders had this really awesome new rock single out. Unfortunately, they realized that no rock radio station would play a song from such a Monkees-esque boyband (It'd be like if the Backstreet Boys or 'NSYNC today put out a really big rock song). So, Paul Revere and the Raiders did the right thing and sent out about a hundred promo copies of the single to all the rock radio stations across America. All the promo copies were accimpanied by a phony press release saying it was the debut single of a great new rock band called Pink Puzz. The ruse worked: the single was played.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 20 December 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That U2 Negativland single belongs in a museum.
