Likely >>> Anything the NME or Lammo thinks is a good British Band.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Ordinary Boys"

I mean ...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My Red Cell. They even have the location on point.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

having the dubious misfortune of having to do a live review, cold, of my red cell, i can say that dj mencap is otm. i could not think of anything to say 'cept 'why am i wasting my time'. that useless. v2 - wot the fuck is that a cover for? exploitation of small third world children because they suk ass in finding bands.

griffn doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. I actually don't/didn't have anything against either them or Terris that's worth losing sleep over, but it's blatantly obvious that MRC are going to go nowhere fast.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

it is because you never had to write about them. i did. the review was killed because i spent all my time talking about how great busted was in comparison! ha ha.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

even the teens/ early 20s on Drowned in Sound are laughing at NME new Britrock types

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

drowned in sound can eat my fuc. indie? pah. they are now a record label who has signed the worst version of the libertines at this moment - the koreans - i would take anything on the nme list over that crack 'ho wannabe bands. indie? yeah. shoved me on all their spam lists without asking me. fuck heads.

bloc party - good demo. interpol-like. was going to see them live last night but left because am sick. apparently i made a good decision.
the glitterati - c'mon its party metal - not up for discussion.
boxer rebellion - actually very good.

the rest i never heard of.

griffindoome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Glitterati? That's not bloody metal! It's like Happy Shopper Aerosmith. Boxer Rebellion - blah. YCNI:M - haven't heard em, sound like the sort of thing I like. Bloc Party - not bad. The Koreans are piss poor aren't they.

Selfish Cunt - played the single about three times in a row, very rare I do that... sounds like it was some random bedroom DIY thing from about 1980, I kept thinking of Big Black's 'Lungs' EP although I'm sure they're a pair of colossal Nathan Barley types who think they're eight hundred times funnier than they actually are.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the boxer rebellion are good ... !!

i'm interested in hearing HAL on rough trade.

my pixx for 2004 are the earlies and micah p. hinson. ha ha. true!

i'm staying away from selfish cunt. it smells bad.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

'party metal'?
considering the kicking you've given The Darkness on this very board, you are surely no supporter of the 'party metal'.
the Gliteratti are a 'rock' Busted. like Cooper Temple Clause, but not as old.

and weren't Boxer Rebellion put together by their management ('indie boyband' stylee)? that was enough to put me off initially, then i heard them.

give me Drownedinsound over NME any old day of the week. at least the D.I.S guys are actually young kids who go to shows. as opposed to the 'cynical misfits over 35 only' hiring policy of the NME.

Tetruss, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure they're a pair of colossal Nathan Barley types who think they're eight hundred times funnier than they actually are.

They are.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

But what is this year's Tetris?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i like busted??

like Cooper Temple Clause, but not as old.

ace.

and weren't Boxer Rebellion put together by their management ('indie boyband' stylee)? that was enough to put me off initially, then i heard them.

and??? what did you think?

give me Drownedinsound over NME any old day of the week. at least the D.I.S guys are actually young kids who go to shows.

at least the dis guys are now are a plc. young/old who cares?

i think it was my red cell jordon.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i like bust, btw, they make me laugh.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Hal supporting St Etienne the other day. They had an unusual sound, in that they seemed to be going for a very straight 70s pop-rock thing, almost like Gilbert O'Sullivan or the pop end of Supertramp or something.

I didn't think they had the vocalist or the songs to carry it, unfortunately, but it may have been a bad night on the former leading me to underrate the latter. I didn't think much of them, though they gave the impression of being decent enough fellows.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

as opposed to the 'cynical misfits over 35 only' hiring policy of the NME.

Hard to think how you could be more wrong with this, really, short of claiming they were supporting 'affirmative action' or something.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Not Hal as in "Extremis"?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

what did i think?
i think they sound exactly like a band who've been put together as an indierock boy band.
they sound like they've been built by NME scientists.
crappy rubbish.

as for D.I.S. what does being a plc have to do with anything?
their age, however, IS important, as it means they haven't had time to become cynical old jerks trailing around after this or that bandwagon, talking up shitty cabaret bands purely because they spent all night hoovering gack with the band's press officer the night before.
the sooner the London-centric, over 40, post-britpop shower hang up their Heavenly logo'd slippers and move on, the better for music in general in this country.

Tetruss, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Britpop peaked in 1995, the britpop types were 16 - 20 then = therefore they are now 24 - 28.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

like signing the koreans? please. dis is bang for 2004. and i wish the nme was like that. you have a very glamorous vision of what it entails. and you'll find all ages at the nme. i don't believe being 'young guys' is this amazing thing. not that i'm old. but i think that is crazy mckooky talk.

tim -- do you think hal would be good on record, tough?

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

and d.i.s. was the first music oriented thing to big up boxer rebellion. check the archives, indie child.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'music oriented thing'

you really DO write for the NME then!?

ted, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"happy shopper aerosmith!!" that makes me want to hear them!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'music oriented thing'

i don't know what to call dis because its so shitty. ha ha.

the glitterati are a pop aerosmith!!

griffn doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey doomie, I'd be vaguely interested to hear a record but I'm not going to shell out money for one on the basis of that show. I mean, I can't remember anything about any of the songs apart fromn the diabolical backing vocals on the first one.

First-time impact, especially in a live context, is not that reliable though, is it?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the gliteratti are are everything you slagged the darkness off for being!
all the things you incorrectly thought about the darkness have now come fully to fruition in the gliteratti.
the only difference being that the gliteratti forgot to bring any actual songs with them from their stageschool.(but they did bring the comedy wigs and brand new harley davidson tshirts, so that's alright then)

the rev jim jones, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i just heard that the recorded output is much better. i dunno - im amazed by how bad a band is live compared to record. but i'm into thunderclap newman and 70s pop lately so i was interested in hal.

am not in love with the glitterati, the reverand indiechild but the darkness have no songs, imo.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i would like a 70s csny comeback but am bad hippie that way. btw, tim, fopp are selling a twofer of the dillard and clark albums for five quid.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

all the things you incorrectly thought about the darkness have now come fully to fruition in the gliteratti.

ha ha. i love the indie thought police. thank god i am not 17 and doing music journalism. it would be confusing. and is it the glitterati's fault that they are attractive when compared to the darkness?

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

tim, would hal rate on my byrds fetish scale?

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't notice anything Byrdsian about them at all. Thanks for the Dillard & Clark tip, but I have both those LPs. Might make a good pressie for someone, though.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

no problem, i reckon that you might have already got them!!! what new stuff have you been into Tim?

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

tim you should check the innocence mission - i reviewed it for the nme - beautiful 70s soft pop.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been loving "Happyness" by the Aluminum Group and by a CD of Dexys rarities that a friend of mine gave me (they covered "Merry Xmas Everybody"! who knew?) and that '74 Glen C & Jimmy Webb LP which I dug out again the other week. Also the Clientele & Relict LPs which remind me of summer '03 like nothing else will, with the possible exception of this year's genius Pines EPs. The new Skriblah single is grebt and the Skinnyman promo is amazing, can't wait for the LP to finally come out.

None of the above, I fear, are any year's "Terris".

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha.

that list blew me away. i still dont get the clientele but will track it. along with the other things you've mentioned ...! as i dig yer taste

lately its been

euphoria (revola)
the earlies (singles)
micah p hinson (demos)
horse (revola)
dillard and clark (a and m)
jessica bailliff (kranky)
bobby conn - the homeland (thrill jockey)
invisible spies sampler
thunderclap newman - something in the air tonight
taking of pelham 123 ost!

griffin doom, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

wot's skinnyman like?

did you ever find those bbp tapes?

i've been into gavouna - this string laden aphex twin soundalike from italy.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Skinnyman's rough highbury hip hop.

I know where those tapes are but don't have access to them for now, I'm afraid. (Any joy on the Richard and Thomas Frost front?)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sending out the thomas and richard frost tomorrow. i've been ill lately. you should check out www.invisiblespies.com - its like they signed 1000 hip hop mark e smiths all yelling at the same time.

been listening to alot of moondog, the monkees and billy childish.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm I didn't think much of the Kid Acne record, I tend to like things just a little smoother than that.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the kid acne record was rubbish. the rest don't sound much like kid acne at all.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! I'll keep an eye out then. Sorry to hear you've been ill.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

supreme vagabond craftsmen sound like damo suzuki stuck in tescos and forced to record observations. 'see that kid in the oasis t-shirt, see him on the motorbike'. i saw him open for andy votel and sage francis.

yeah, i'm about to take a relaxing bath. just the flu that's been going about - and this week was stupuid busy - bobby conn and entrance pieces to finish plus day job plus meet and greet with somebody who is interested in me doing something for them.

sigh.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

off i go ..

tim, when you get the record - let's start a thread and chat about it!

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I like Entrance. I hope you're nice abt it.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

very nice. he's a nice guy as well.

griffin doome, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Haha. I actually don't/didn't have anything against either them or Terris that's worth losing sleep over, "

i read this as "worth losing sheep over".

emsk, Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Franz Ferdinand are this years Terris, none of the other bands listed have been given that much hype (at least in my orbit.) They are also bloody awful, what were Domino thinking of? £?

and is it the glitterati's fault that they are attractive when compared to the darkness?

For this to be true, the Darkness would have to be... well nothing's that ugly.

Ben Dot (1977), Friday, 19 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

not heard franz ferninard - i've got a guilty secret about dominio - i think that all their own signings are rubbish and use dominio to get the drag city stuff cheap!

what do franz ferninard sound like?

listened to the earlies and micah p hinson on the way into work. i'm convinced of their genius.

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Why's that a guilty secret? I think the majority of people predominantly like Domino for their Drag City bands. It's just a logo on the back of a CD anyway, who cares.

Franz Ferdinand are decent angular art-punk with guitars at Mark King height. Anyone who can't find a more appropriate target for their vitriol isn't trying hard enough.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess its a guilty secret because everyone i've met goes on about how ace domino is - but when i've tried something that was not drag city related - my god - the pain of it all - though i do like clinic, four tet and james yorkston - but the rest - hood, clearlake, future pilot aka etc - awful rubbish.

so what have we got so far on the list?

my red cell

and i want to add another - the rocks - useless rubbish if i've ever heard any - that and - kaito ... blaugh blaugh blaugh.

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

it would be cool if entrance would be a buzz guy but i don't think the neophyte blues child of the byrds eight miles high riff isnt going to be huge for 2004 - if the icy reception he gets when he plays is a factor...

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Future Pilot is GREAT! He's not strictly a Domino ting anyways, it's on Geographic. I guess that FSA/Hood/3rd Eye Foundation axis is the sort of thing where people either fall rapturously into it or just wonder why they don't turn the drums up a little. I know Clearlake really rub people up the wrong way as well, but I'm frequently amazed by how much I like them.

Over the last week I've been going through a huge backlog of singles from this year, on the grounds that I should do them the favour of another proper listen before deciding whether they're good or shit. They've almost all been shit. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that's a surefire bet for next year. Truthfully I don't care.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

domino rules. i liked them even when they were a drag city paper towel but they justified them entirely for James Yorkston and The Kills (whose album is A HUNDRED THOUSAND FUCKING TIMES BETTER THAN THE WHITE STRIPES and i'll defend this to the death).

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Domino also released the fifth best single of all time, Hood's "useless".

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, i dig the kills. but they had the choice of any label at all . . . but i'm not sure if like the kills because they are good or because my friend manages them. so i usually avoid talk of the kills.

dj mencap - b... b.. but its fun.

i think you should check out the micah p hinson album when it comes out on sketchbook. that and the earlies. god, i'm a repeato machino, not...

hood is useless rubbish.

but not as useless as this northern electro compilation i was sent. sexy it is not!

i guess, in 2001 - i was big upping the warlocks and yeah even i got sick of the warlocks. but its a disease with me. what's the next big thing? what's the next big thing? ha ha.

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't keep singles either. dunno why? not enough storage space i guess.

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

don't tar all hood records with the same brush - i am no great fan of their recent work (although i think it's ok), but the single i mention is a truly excellent song.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the future pilot aka just reminds me of cornershop's last album. o.k. jim will check it out.

i think the twee award this year should go to isobel campbell's solo effort. jane birkin she is not!!

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kills and The Blueskins are, I think, the first Domino bands in the label's history who inspire no emotion in me whatsoever.

Which also applies to Isobel Campbell's album, seeingt as you beat me to posting.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

what do the blueskins sound like???

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Um... well there are guitars on there. Some of the songs are quite fast and some are slower. Fuck. I've listened to them a fair few times but...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

that was me trying to describe my red cell. hey!! i've got another terris one - seraphin.

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

now i know why my record buying has slowed down so much

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

why's that jim?

griffin doome, Friday, 19 December 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

new music has ceased to excite. i see the word "serafin" and i weep.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but in reality their records are probably selling in such pitifully small numbers they barely register as a blip on the general scale.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)
