Just watched this film again and realised what a shame it is that the excellently chosen 80s songs never appeared on the soundtrack.
I know most of the songs from ear, but I don't know what they're caleld and who performed them. I particularly like the tune that gets played near the beginning when you first see the school and it pans around all the different characters. I think there's some Slayer in there too.
This uis the thread where you write all the songs that feature in the film but aren't on the released score.

By far the funniest use of a pop song is Duran Duran's "Notorious" during Donnie's sister's dance competition.
Other tracks used are Echo's "The Killing Moon," The Church's "Under The Milky Way," Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," and the one you specifically requested (slow pan across the school grounds) Tears For Fears' "Head Over Heels."

DO a search on donnie darko soundtrack and syou should find the philosophy of time travel-Donnie Darko soundtrack of sorts. It lists all the songs from the movie, not the score. You can email Erin and send cd-r and get copy of the soundtrack.

the song is mad world and here are the lyrics
all around me are familiar faces
wornout places, wornout faces
bright and early for their daily races
going nowhere, going nowhere
their tears are filling up their glasses
no expression, no expression
hide my head i wanna drown my sorrow
no tomorrow, no tomorrow
and i find it kinda funny, i find it kinda sad
the dreams in which i'm dying are the best i've ever had
i find it hard to tell you, i find it hard to take
when people run in circles its a very very
mad world, mad world
children waiting for the day they feel good
happy birthday, happy birthday
make me feel the way that every child should
sit and listen, sit and listen
went to school and i was very nervous
no one knew me, no one knew me
hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
look right through me, look right through me
chorus...
mad world, mad world
enlarge your world,
mad world

By far the funniest use of a pop song is Duran Duran's "Notorious" during Donnie's sister's dance competition. When they filmed that sequence, Pet Shop Boy's "West End Girls" was used. The filmmakers were never able to secure the rights to that song, so they used "Notorious" instead which makes that scene even more fun to watch now that you know all of those dance moves had to be edited to fit the song in post-production.
i am teh ghey.
