Metal: the Default Setting for White Boys

watching the wretched Darkness on TV last night and knowing they could never be 'ironic' 'cause they looked too happy, with lightning bolts coming outta their geetars and stuff, I got to thinking- is this what all bands aspire to, whether 'indie' or not? Will Bright Eyes cover AC/DC sooner than you thnk? When I listen to Weezer it's like watching 60 Minutes specials on "ex-gays" trying to be heterosexual- it's not gonna happen. Just quit trying, Rivers-you know too many chords. You can't hide it! anyhow, just a rambling thought

Ridiculous. First of all, The Darkness album rules. Second of all, Rivers Cuomo doesn't know NEARLY enough chords to be TRULY metal. But then, you probably haven't listened to much Lamb of God lately. People like Bright Eyes and those who might 'ironically' cover / ape metal moves are spiritually and creatively bankrupt, and it usually shows in the rest of their catalog.

Mainstream hip hop has been the default setting for what you refer to as 'white boys' for years.

Metal: the Default Setting for White House

for a moment it was morning in america again...

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 21 December 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the White House needs more metal, f'real. I can just picture GWB rockin' out to Khanate/Nile/Godflesh.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 21 December 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Metal: The default setting for Whitehouse fans when they are looking for a little chill-out music to listen to at home after the all-night noise festival.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 21 December 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My brain broke 2 times while reading this.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 21 December 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i gave up and decided to go with the flow.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My default setting is Singer / Songwriter.

Since I am a black chick, I will play the race card this one time and use my observer status to note the contamination in certain strata of hip-hop by metal, forming all-new suckiness (see: Limp Bizkit ad nauseum). And no, this isn't a question per se, just a musing- seems that given the chance, bands like Weezer et alia would rather be playing Kiss covers (beautiful and stoned) than anything else. PS The Darkness still sucks, Justin's falsetto will burn out in a year and that record will be clogging cutout bins everywhere. Having said that, they're a shoo-in for Christmas No. 1.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

what is this christmas no.1 thing that you brits keep going on about? does everyone in the u.k. get up really early in the morning on christmas and check to see who has the number one single? oh, i'm more confused than ever!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and pps, the kneejerk reaction to my anti-Darkness sentiment SO proves my point

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

we have to have something to get excited about, scott.

pete s, Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Please direct me to Yanni metal traxx so my life can finally be complete.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

we get up, tip-toe downstairs, switch on our little wireless transistor radios, and tune in to the BBC radio third programme, where, if were lucky, underneath all the crackling/fishing reports, we can make out sir jimmy saville telling us whether or not rolf harris or alma cogan has snared this year's no.1 yuletide spot in the chart. and if it's a tune we like we all shout hooray! and if it's a tune we dislike we all shout boooo! then the radio plays god save the queen and we all go back to bed and rot for another year

pete s, Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

perms/mullets, paradoxically, preclude one from inclusion in my fine theory. snap!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

that's cool! we just sit there very very still and pretend that we don't know that bing crosby used to beat his kids with razor wire.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 21 December 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, the fact that Rivers was in a Kiss tribute type band back when he lived in Storrs, CT (if I remember correctly) JUST MIGHT have something to do with the eau du Destroyer you're getting from his recent works. Maybe he has a Kiss spreadsheet to go w/ his Nirvana spreadsheet - he went to Harvard; I wouldn't put it past him. And, hell, if all the other nominally "metal" bands vying for fiscal significance wanna tart up & leaven their angst-ridden passive agressive misogyny (or misanthropy) (or whatever -y they're burdened with) with some Hammer horror special FX and grandiose windmilling theatrical BALLZ, then fuck yeah.

The fact that I'll never get to hear any of this tartistry while living in CT, however, is another ball of wax I'll avoid pissing on lest I bore the shit out of the 2 people reading this thread with a fiction-filled bitchfest concerning Clearchannel and Infinity Broadcasting and the local airwaves wearing a nut-filled Dirty Sanchez.
