Ocora

One thing I'm looking to explore in the coming year is some 'world' music, field recordings and so on.

I have a couple of releases from this label: pandit ravi shankar and gopal krishan 2 CD of ragas on the vichitra vina (I'm sure there'a few spelling mistakes here). But I kind of read a few things on indian classical and the links with minimalism. Its the one thing I kind of have bits of knowledge at.

Any recordings from places such as vietnam or Iran that you enjoy?

Julio, I'm not sure what you are asking. Do you just want things on Ocora?

An ocora search is what I'd like. thanks in advance ppl.

cool. I have one of those bali discs from the nonesuch explorer series so that's another bit of world/field recordings stuff that I've got into. I might (if no one does it first) do a thread on those one day.

The Mohamed Khaznadji CD in the Ocora Arab-Andalusian series is quite good, though I'm not sure it's still in print. It's low-key, quiet, repetitive.

I don't have much on Ocora, actually, I just know I've heard things that sound good, or at least seen titles that looked promising.

two years pass...
Actually Ocora released 5 cd's by Khaznadji, all of which were great, especially the M'Jenba nouba. It's a shame they're out of print. They were the *only* serious recordings of Algerian Andalusian music since the eighties, and as such were the last legacy of "old-school" andalus from Algiers by one of their greatest remaining representative.

oops, I meant Sonodisc above. Ocora released only two cd's.

Khaznadji is excellent. I thought I'd seen Algerian Andalusian music releases from the past few years, but perhaps you wouldn't consider them serious. I really don't know much about the tradition. But anyway, I vote for a reissue of any Khaznadji discs.

i have some ocora volumes from Iran that are absolutely killer, extremely well-recorded santur recital stuff. there is one with flute & santur that smokes. also iirc they have a music of vietnam volume that i enjoy.

lol now that i read the original question, those are the kind of things julio asked about!

also, i really covet the cloth bound editions of these as opposed to the glossy black versions.

cloth-bound like how the box-sets are?

i don't know how many were issued like that tbh, probably had a pretty immense manufacturing cost for such a specialized product?

ian, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

You bourgeois bastards who can afford to buy expensive imported French world music releases!

Actually Ocora released 5 cd's by Khaznadji

I think I still have not seen any of the other four.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

as far as i can tell, theyre only expensive insofar as they are imported, so its not really fair to put us bourgeois bastards in double-jeopardy.

69, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

tbh the two or three volumes I have in the Iran series were only $3 each cuz the jackets are waterdamaged.
