Well i've heard better Nick Cave.

What's everyone's opinion?

Rubbish. I think I've played it twice and it's been gathering dust ever since.

Much like Nocturama, it's got some fantastic stuff on it (like 'Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow'), but also quite a bit of godawful dross. 'God is in The House' really bugs the shit out of me, I've never enjoyed that whole Randy Newman/David Ackles type of song.

Some filler, but worth the price of admission for "Hallelujah." Hell, worth the price of admission for the last 30 seconds or so of "Hallelujah." (You know, the buckets of tears thing. I love it when he gets all melodramatic and over-the-top and shit.)

And I think "God is in the House" is pretty damned funny.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

god is in the house is great, the last several songs are magnificent, but the title track is crap. I dont' listen to it much and the Boatman's Call is probably my favorite Cave record so it's not the mellowness that bothers me, but the tediousness. It's better than Nocturama though which I looked at yesterday and realized I hadn't listened to since the week it came out.

dud, dud, dud but i lost interest in nick with The Boatsman's Call which i thought was turgid poo.

I like his records best when Mick Harvey is in full control of the sonics.

It's actually one of my favorite Cave albums. Nocturama carries on similarly in a way, but for me it represents a big fall-off in quality.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's as good as any of the records he made previously. Some days I won't be in the mood for it, and some people won't ever be in the mood for it, but it's fine.

Nocturama is total total shite. The two can't be compared. Nocturama was such a dramatic fall, after so long a streak of excellence.

Definitely a classic.

Probably my favourite Cave album with Boatman's call.

Mikhail Capone (Mikhail Capone), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that Nick Cave fans have such divergent opinions about his best/worst stuff. Pretty much every one of his albums is a favorite of one contingent and "total shit" to another. There's no consensus, no Nick Cave "canon."

I put this one in the "pretty good but not great" pile, considering it a nice recovery from "The Boatman's Call" and a masterpiece compared to "Nocturama." ("The Boatman's Call" has kind of grown on me; "Nocturama" really hasn't.)

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC, CLASSIC, CLASSIC.

The album that got me into Nick Cave. Salmon Pink OTM re: "Hallelujah", a seven minute song that feels like three.

I don't understand all the hate for Nocturama, I like it.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 28 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It took awhile to grow on me, although I never hated it .. All of the somgs sound better live .. but "Oh My Lord" has been kicking my ass for weeks.

Still haven't gotten into Nocturama..
