Covers of obscure Beatles songs

The Beatles are probably the most covered band in the history of pop music, but are there any good/or interesting covers of their more obscure songs like Revolution 9, What's the new Mary Jane, If you've got troubles, Dig it, Her Majesty, or I want you ? Come to think of it, are there any covers of Yoko Ono's songs like Don't worry Kyoko or Open your box ?

Galaxie 500 covered Yoko's "Listen, the Snow is Falling"
Alex Chilton "borrowed" the chords and melody of "Mrs. Lennon" for "Holocaust".

I don't know how obscure you could say the song is, but Gene Clark's post-byrds band Dillard and Clark do a really nice country version of "don't let me down". and some wiseguy out there must have covered Yoko's "Two Minutes Silence".

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I consider "She's a Woman" quite obscure, and Scritti Politti certainly did a great version of that one in 1991.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Redd Kross (as Tater Totz) do a version of "Don't Worry Kyoko," and I have this terrible "Beatles" covers album on the Pickwick label where "The Trybe" cover "Why." It's pretty pointless, though.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dillard and Clark's Dont Let me Down is as good as the original.

Yes cover Every Little Thing on their first (eponymous) album.

Scott Miller (of Game Theory and the Loud Family) and Anton Barbeau recorded a cover of "Revolution 9" for a White Album tribute album that, I believe, never came out.

Their take on "Revolution 9" though has been made available as an MP3 on the Loud Family site. I'm not sure if it's still there.

Here's an exhaustive list of Beatles songs and who, as of Sept. 2000, has recorded covers of them.

Hoser, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That link is behaving strangely for me. Here's the addy without my HTML.

I once saw the Aquanettas do a killer version of "Why" live.

Vital Music put out a single some years back with, I think, four bands doing "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)"--each one got a section of it!

I was only slightly disappointed that the Moles' single "What's the New Mary Jane" wasn't a cover of the Beatles song.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a cover of "Two Minutes Silence" on the Soundgarden album Ultramega OK, I do believe.

Schwingung (Damian), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the pixies cover of wild honey pie count?

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an album of Yoko Ono covers, including some by Harry Nilsson, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello. Elvis' cover ("Walking On Thin Ice") also turns up on the CD reissue of Punch The Clock.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There are no obscure Beatle songs.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

my girlfriend's recording a cover of "peace of mind," which is credited to the beatles on various bootlegs but is really just some guys fucking around and sort of trying to sound beatlesque with an acoustic guitar.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hi folks, i would like to direct your attention to the instrumental version of Yes It Is, by Robert Quine/Jody Harris and declare that it may be tha best all guitar cover these ears have heard. it smokes.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Flaming Lips have covered "What's the New Mary Jane" live. Its on some bootlegs. Bongwater covered 'Julia,' which is sorta obscure, and 'Rain,' which isn't. I remember seeing the Restraints (Atlanta punk band) do a cover of 'There's A Place' live, but I don't know if it ever saw the light of day. Probably not, come to think of it. I think they only had one 7" and 2 cuts on a various artists compilation called "Standard Deviations." So, never mind. :-)

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 26 December 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Residents selected "Flying" to cover because, they claim, it was the only song they could find that had songwriting credits for all four Beatles. (A quick Google search shows that "Dig It" was also credited to all four.)

Ernest P. (ernestp), Friday, 26 December 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The B-52's covered "Don't Worry, Kyoko" on their album Whammy, but Yoko made them remove the track when the album was reissued on CD, so it's only on the original vinyl release.

this single was made by some friends of mine a few years ago, its an acapella cover of 'revolution 9'. the b-side has acapella 'horse latitudes' and 'alans psychedelic breakfast'! never underestimate the power of drunken ideas..

zappi (joni), Friday, 26 December 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone covered "Free as a Bird"?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 26 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes, "'Revolution 9,' the most obscure of Beatles songs."

Has anyone covered "Free as a Bird"?

Yeah, ELO.

Oh wait, I'm thinking of the original.

Def FX covered Revolution 9, 'cept they called it Revolution #9.

Pack Yr Romantic Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone covered "i'll get you"?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Firewater recently covered "Hey Bulldog"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Herbie Mann did "Flying" on his "Stone Flute" LP.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was about 18, the band that I was in did a cover of "Peace of Mind," that fake Beatles song that used to be on bootlegs.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Along with Scritti Politti, Jeff Beck also covered "She's A Woman", but as a near-instrumental, with vocals approximated using a Frampton-style VoxBox.

"Maxwell's Silver Hammer" was covered by The Bells, Canadian ultra-soft rockers, best known for the sappy-but-beautiful 1971 top ten hit "Stay Awhile."

Matthew Sweet and The Feelies both covered my favourite Beatles song, the relatively obscure "She Said She Said." And the Feelies also did "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey."

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Athens band Dreams So Real used to cover "She Said She Said" live; can't remember if they recorded it.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin Newman did "Blue Jay Way", I think as it had never been covered before...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Obscure" and "Beatles Songs" are words that don't really go well together at this point.

Siouxsie & the Banshees have a romp through "Blue Jay Way" on the live Seven year Itch.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to hear a cover of old brown shoe. does one exist?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC OTFM.

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Borbetomagus did some extrapolation of "Blue Jay Way," too.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretentious proto-emo band from D.C., Senator Flux (sometimes featuring Jeff Nelson, ex-Minor Threat, on drums) recorded a sorely overcooked rendition of "It's All Too Much" on their long since forgotten debut album.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncle Green used to do 'Everybody's Got Somethikng To Hide Except For Me & My Monkey' live, but I can't recall if it made it onto any of their records, or on the 3 Lb. Thrill record - their last incarnation. I was in a band called the Opium Hello. We used to do 'She Said She Said.' It sorta sounded like what might have happened if Walkingseeds had covered it.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to hear a cover of old brown shoe. does one exist?

Oddly enough I was thinking of this song in particular when I clicked on the thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Feelies have done "She Said, She Said" as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

you should listen to Jennifer Gentle's version of "Blue Jay Way", of course... ;)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

I was wondering if there's an extant cover version of every beatles song ever recorded. i would think not, but god only knows

here's another site with covers listed:

wow. now i remember seeing that, and thinking, wow

Billy Pilgrim, Friday, 11 January 2008 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

I had a dream once that I was watching Muse on TV covering I Want You (She's So Heavy) and it was a really good version.
