T/S: The Beatles "What Goes On" vs. The Velvet Underground "What Goes On"

Challenging, eh? I think so. I haven't even made up me mind myself. Except when I was listening to the Beatles song today I kept singing the title-line with Lou Reed's vocal cadence???

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Not one of my favorite Beatles tunes, *definately* one of my favorite Velvets tunes.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

VU wins, especially for the brilliant "hmm, can't decide which guitar solo take to use, so okay, let's USE THEM ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY" idea.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A harder "T/S" thread would be Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" versus Husker Du's "What's Going On" (both unbelievably good songs, yes?).

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Husker Du's song is just a bunch of noise!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

so is every song.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

at the end of the day, that is.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Meat Purveyors' cover of VU's "What Goes On".

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take the VU songs. "What Goes On" isn't exactly a high-point in the output of the Beatles.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 24 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

VU "What goes On" Especialy on "Live 1969" The riff that goes on .........

nine years pass...

is "ballad of John and yoko" kind of proto lou reed? Or maybe proto 80s Lou reed?

brimstead, Saturday, 16 March 2013 03:04 (thirteen years ago)

How so?

timellison, Saturday, 16 March 2013 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

don't see it at all, but the first half of 'happiness is a warm gun' is a little reed-ish.

been back about a day, xp. this version is great. the song is so simple and mesmerizing.

three years pass...

VU version should be two or five times longer

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 July 2017 03:06 (eight years ago)

I'd be down with that. I think there are some live versions that go on a little longer. As much as I like them, I've always loved the studio track the most. The guitar solos are so fucking loud.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 1 July 2017 06:06 (eight years ago)

Will never forget my high school history teacher's response to when the solis kick in: "is this supposed to sound like that?"

Οὖτις, Saturday, 1 July 2017 06:17 (eight years ago)

You could definitely medley from the Ringo song into the Lou one, they both go "What goes on, in your ...", just from heart to mind's a mild jump.

Mark G, Saturday, 1 July 2017 08:24 (eight years ago)

There are live versions of the VU song that are around six and a half minutes, and that seems about the right length because then the track can keep building. The studio version seems too short and fades out just as things really start to get going.

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Saturday, 1 July 2017 08:46 (eight years ago)

I've always thought the live 1969 / Matrix versions were the platonic ideal of rhythm guitar.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Saturday, 1 July 2017 08:59 (eight years ago)

Yes, that's what? Almost 9 minutes?

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 July 2017 09:51 (eight years ago)

longest version i know of is the hilltop festival version which chugs along for, like, 12 minutes. it damn near _choogles_.

The Saga of Rodney Stooksbury (rushomancy), Saturday, 1 July 2017 12:32 (eight years ago)

also, search: the dils' version of the velvets' "what goes on".

The Saga of Rodney Stooksbury (rushomancy), Saturday, 1 July 2017 12:47 (eight years ago)

Lol xpost. Did the Velvets ever go on record, pro or con, about Creedence the way they did about their label mate enemies The Mothers?

Guidonian Handsworth Revolution (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 July 2017 12:52 (eight years ago)

I remember reading somewhere that Ahmet Ertegun (or was it Arif Mardin?) signed the Velvets thinking they could be like CCR, and I think Lou said there was more to the Velvets than just high energy rock 'n' roll - that's could be wrong on every count, by they way, defective memory alert.

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 July 2017 12:56 (eight years ago)

Which reminds me, I read recently Neil Young slagging off CCR, saying the songs all sounded the same/ were in the same key/ had the same guitar solo, something like that. This was back in the day. I'm sure it was Neil Young.

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 July 2017 12:59 (eight years ago)

Now I'm wondering how that Tom Wilson webpage is proceeding

Guidonian Handsworth Revolution (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 July 2017 13:20 (eight years ago)

(xpost) That's really surprising, if true. Neil's fandom is usually pretty shrewd, but I've got to say "Huh?" there.

clemenza, Saturday, 1 July 2017 13:44 (eight years ago)

Strike that, it was Buffalo Springfield Ahmet Ertegun (or Arif Mardin - bear with me) compared the Velvets to. I think the Lou quote does refer to CCR though. If it was Lou that said it. Apologies.

Narcissism of small differences, innit?

Guidonian Handsworth Revolution (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 July 2017 13:48 (eight years ago)

Indeed, sounds more like something David Crosby would say.

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 July 2017 13:50 (eight years ago)

(xpost) I know, but he generally gushes over his contemporaries, especially those from the late '60s--Dylan, the Beatles, Hendrix, etc. Just surprised that CCR would be treated differently (or at least that he'd speak up about it).

clemenza, Saturday, 1 July 2017 13:53 (eight years ago)

No, it was a contemporary comment.

weird echo of the falsies (Tom D.), Saturday, 1 July 2017 14:24 (eight years ago)

I can see how Young might've been jealous of CCR, maybe acutely so. Fogerty was churning out an insane string of huge hits, and CCR had a taut energy that Crazy Horse lacked (though Crazy Horse's strengths lay elsewhere -- CCR couldn't have done "Cortez"). I wouldn't be surprised if Young was envious of not just "Fortunate Son" (which he couldn't have written, nor could Crazy Horse have played) but also "Ramble Tamble." CCR and Fogerty did a lot of what Neil was trying for, but faster, and with bigger hits.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 1 July 2017 14:44 (eight years ago)

VU version should be two or five times longer

nah on record its perfect length. this would take up too much on space on the record and we'd have to cut other songs. let Neu do that.
