RFI: Amps For Christ/Man IsThe Bastard/Bastard Noise

When I picked up Amps For Christ's "Oaks In The Ashes," I expected something vaguely in-line with Bastard Noise--harsh noises, clanging, yelling. What I got was a bunch of really great psych-pop songs, a celtic instrumentals, a few noise tracks (tho not very extreme noise) and some spoken word? It's surprisingly good. The spoken word is a bit goofy, but the rest is rad. Especially since it was only $5.

So, are other Amps for Christ albums like this? Noisier?

Also, on this axis: where do I start with Man Is The Bastard? I've heard of splits with some bands I like A LOT (Born Against, Sinking Body,) but also with lots of booringboring stuff. And apply the same question to Bastard Noise, who I've heard and liked but don't own anything by.

Looking at this discography makes me think to order the "recycled" tape from RRR, since I wanted to order some stuff from there anyway. See: the noise thread from earlier today.

I actually dig Barnes's stuff, Amps for Christ stuff gets a little dense sometimes tho. Great tape (on Shrimper maybe?) worth seeking out

Never connected with Bastard Noise but went thru a big MITB faze in high school and really like those records still

Any specifically worth checking out? The discography is huge and I'm pretty unsure where to start--is one as good as another?

amps for christ is generally some great stuff; i quite like "amps for christ and two ambiguous figures (something something)" which is AFC and the two main guys from man is the bastard. lots of noisy elements and three really beautiful folky songs. "the oak in the ashes" is swell.

man is the bastard stuff is mostly collected on two cds, i think - "sum of the men" and "DIYCD." generally either long (6-10 min) and slow heavy jams with two basses, drums and guitar or really short, fast ones. for me the fast stuff was always better. "sum of the men" also has "our earth's blood," a kind of whitehouse-y 7" (but with anarchist leanings) that seemed to be the genesis of the bastard noise project.

as for bastard noise, well... saw them open for merzbow back when it was the two vocalists from MITB and some others, lots of crust-y screaming and angry shouts over shrieking feedback and grinding noise. it was cool and pretty funny, really, seeing these two little guys screaming their lungs out. the most recent bastard noise stuff is kind of digital noise/drone stuff with john wiese of helicopter records. i've heard a shitload of similar stuff by everyone from aube to phill niblock to ian nagoski and i don't really need to hear more.

El Sabor OTM, tho i really hate that "Our Earth's Blood" 7"

John Weise is in a class by himself./ Search all Sissy Spacek / Helicopter Records material at once!

the MITB discography 2xcd isn't nearly copmplete, but a good place to start if yr downloading. the Gravity LP is very very good too.

Got the Bastard Noise "Reycled" tape. It's neat. Not what I expected; just weird bursts of oscillator/pedal noise that fade in and out. kind of unsettling. pleasingly angry. i like it, for what it is.

four weeks pass...
I have an Amps for Christ 7" on some MI label, it sounds like NES noises over a sitar.

jon, tape it for me.

and while we're on the subject, I got the first Man Is The Bastard LP in the mail. Way sludgier than anticipated, but good. The production is weird; everything seems to fade into the background and NOTHING in the mix really grabs your attention until there's a change.

three years pass...

MITB side of Mumia split is sounding better than ever right now. Holy shit.

I didn't realize that new AFC material was forthcoming. (or is it?)

and why don't I listen to bastard noise's rogue astronaut more? it's kinda amazing.
