Music Video's............

Is it a good thing.....?
Once apon a time people bought a release on the merit that the (audio) was what they were interested in.

I do belive the future may hold a synergy betwen audio and visual.
But there are certain genres at present that the video overpowers the audio. People are buying the smoke and mirrors.

I do work in a maketing enviroment, so i do appreciate the marketing machine to drive unit sales, but is it nessessary

a lot of music videos are great art and that is justification enough for their existence imo. i quite like the fact that they can overpower the songs they're supposed to be promoting. it's primarily for this reason that there was deemed to be enough interest for the release of the works of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry on DVD after all.

music videos are a tremendous expense and i believe an unjustifiable one most of the time. i can't even think of a music video in the last ten years that i felt was worthwhile.

you don't like short films with a pre-meditated soundtrack then?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget that they're as much a blessing/curse for the film industry as well. Some great advances fucked up by overusage on TV and in blockbuster films.

Having worked on three music videos over the past few months, I can definitely say that they are hard to do well, yes. But personally, I think that they can be justified if done for the right reasons - all three of mine were low-budget ones paid for directly by the artists, so we just sat down, planned them out and had fun making them.

sorry, but you used the words "synergy" and "marketing" in yr post and now i have to go throw up ok! bye.

SteveM's named some good names. I like what I've seen of Autechre's attempts at video synthesis. They are going for the audiovidual synergy thing.

Sorry el sabor, for making you throw up again, if you're still here. Synergy. Marketing. Hahaha!!! Sorry.

mr barrow
Yes i cannot agree more that the gap for certain genres are narrowing
especially the parralells between Techno and Visuals.
For me this is the next logical step !!
Stevem is right on the money with some of the Video artists mentioned.
But these are visually interesting but not what i need to see in the merging of music and visuals..

Anyone got any idea's?

well if it's just audiovisual synchronicity you're after then research Emergency Broadcast Network (cutting up video clips for around 10-15 years), Coldcut/Hexstatic (ditto), software like V-Jamm and more recently the excellent REALTIME sync editing used for Radiohead's live shows which blew me away

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

were getting close.... Coldcut/Hexstatic are syncing recorded video footage.

Their stuff is natural and for the genre it is not taking the nxt step to the future..To me their work is video effects and pretty pictures that entertain and please the eye.

I am after something more simple, primary colours and shapes that represent notes and pulses..

This is too busy for me, sorry stevem i need to elaborate more ....I do think there stuff is amazing though !

where is mr barrow??

this doesn't sound like much of a forward step tho - it would be pretty simple to do and i'm sure there are examples out there both realtime and pre-recorded

thanks blueski
I'll keep looking but i will also keep trying
This is just the basis of the concept
I have been looking at audiovisualsynthesis for about 12 yrs, all over the world. What i see generally is 2 ego's (not a bad thing)
A producer or dj and a vj working together.
But these two have their own agenda's.
What i want is to hear and see "zen and the art of audiovisual"
now i am not getting all hippy here!, imagine a stream and the sound of the stream...at the moment i can see the video but the audio does not match. The closest thing to what i have in my head is the video/audio to gantz gaff by autechre..

I applaude this work this is a great step forward

espresso fetish (espresso fetish), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the Autechre vid is interesting in that neither the audio or the visual make any sense except in relation to each other - pure abstract in terms of context and meaning. although in a way this makes it NOT interesting but certainly curious.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

could not agreee more
I have the release on 12"
and dvd, first i listened to it in the headphones and thought
Intelligent programming, alot of sitting in a room clicking a mouse.

Then i watched the dvd film clip to GG and there it took me down a different path.
Also saw some poor bugger sitting in a room for 1000's of hrs clicking a mouse

Still must take of my hat to them .. fine work

espresso fetish (espresso fetish), Sunday, 28 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the Autechre Ganz Graf thing is impressive rather than visceral. It's very much a head thing, very scientific.
