Bravecaptain — C/D?

I'm a huge Martin Carr fan, adore the Boos, etc. But I'm hesitant to call BC all that successful. Loved the "Corporation Man" single, as well as about half of Advertisements For Myself (particularly "The Weight That You Have Found"). But on AFM and The Fingertip Sessions Vols. 1 and 2 both that certain...something seems to be missing.

Or is it?

the songwriting seems a lot less ambitious than the Boos. possibly caused by writing for himself as opposed to writing for a band

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 28 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate brave captain, i loved the boos. he seems to try to be earnest and willfully odd at the same time, it doesn't work. he's not welsh. oh and he can't sing either.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 28 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the new free dl EP on his site is the best bc stuff yet

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 28 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hit or miss. Not sure if I'd call the website EP his best, but it is free, and pretty good. I think he's still trying to work out the best balance between his pop songwriting and the electronics that he loves. If he ever gets it right, it could be fantastic.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"brave captain" by firehose - absolute classic.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the record with the really long title (comp. of Fingertip Saint sessions) is actually kind of brilliant.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked it too, methinks. So he's gone glitchish? Bemusing.

Brave Captain, last Friday.

Nice beard.

mei (mei), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the hell is that?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, Cardiff Coal Exchange, at the Welsh Music Awards last Friday.

Why the surprise???

mei (mei), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

With the cap as well, he looks like some bongo-playing asshole in Harvard Square...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Should I listen to them? I've never really bothered? I heard one song "Better Living Through Wreckless Experimentation" which didn't seem to do anything at all. It was like the Boo Radleys at their most dull.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, he's expirimenting rather wrecklessly with that beard.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wreckless" is Eric. Reckless is what you mean...

Anyhow, I thought FingSaint vol 1 was quite promising, but AdsMyself I got about 1/2 way through and hoy'd it out of t'player. Sorry.

The Boos seem to have a 'best of' on the schedule for this year (2CD set called "Wake up boo")

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, sorry.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

This all reminds me I made a copy of my Boo B-sides CDRs for Martin C. but I never got his mailing address. I should get a hold of him again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that you (all those years ago)?

Did I get you the b-sides for the "Kingsize" single?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe it was you indeed! Hi there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Aah nice one. Heck, I got my 'review' of Giant Steps on the "celebrate 10 years of Giant Steps" minisite, dead chuffed..

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If memory services, I liked that "Blues for George Michael" quite a bit.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Blues for George Michael" is a towering slab of scattyminded genius.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Their crowning moment it was indeed!

Can't wait for this best of! Hope it's got a few goodies on it for da fans. I didn't know Kingsize was released as a single? Also what's this about a "10 years of Giant Steps" site?

Always with the questions!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Bottom of page for the Giant Steps site, and just above it a free EP for downloading.

get to it

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm on that Giant Steps site too, somewhere. A friend of mine used to run their fanclub, many moons ago.

The magazine I work for is interviewing Martin Carr today probably in email.

So...what should we ask him???

Help!!!

mei (mei), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Why did the boos end so suddenly?" no farewell gigs, just one day a message on the workshy board. Even the 'last single' was cancelled.

"What's Alan McGee's beef?" he hates "Wake Up" now and I have heared McGee's take on why he 'fell out' with the boos. be interesting to hear the other side...

"The truth about his "punch-up" with Paul Weller" (I do know, but it's quite funny)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Punch up you say? Excellent!

mei (mei), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ask him if he remembers Tom Goddard, our old physics teacher.

new album, 'distractions', for free on its way via the website ..

here's the tracklisting :

1. Whatever happened to the Fingertipsaint?
2. I don't know any better
3. Those with nothing to fear have nothing to hide
4. Ocean
5. European Man
6. It's what we make it
7. Oh You
8. Jerusalem (feat. Akira the Don)

some nice and easy pop music, some kinda freaky messed up noises.

if you liked the last album then you really should get your downloads ready ..

Huge Boos fan and like about a CD-80 worth of songs from bravecaptin. Never saw this thread as it was before my time on ILM. I will have to hear this new download again because the first listen left a bit to be desired. Here is a thread I made a few days ago...

Former Boo Radleys members news: Paperlung (Sice from) and bravecaptain (man behind that band)

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 6 February 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

it's still good. some of the rhyming couplets are so rubbish though that it feels like he's made them that bad on purpose. Great ideas, okay it's not the boos but it's grebt!

Ok, blanking -- during the song w/ Akira the Don on BC's new one, Distractions, Carr comes in about two thirds of the way in, singing: "There's no choice when there's only one outcome/There's not discussion when there's only one voice." It's one of his best melodies in a years -- and it's stolen from another BC song.

Which is it?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

nineteen years pass...

Right now I love every song on Go With Yourself, but the nine-minute title track & closer is doing me in:

Go With Yourself

It reminds me in spirit of Dylan's Mississippi -- wistful, half-defeated, undaunted.

Whether it's by himself or with the Boos, I've been finding more & more Martin Carr songs that go careening straight into my pantheon of "most incredible songs ever" --

Goldrush '49 (2010) -- beautiful from the opening riff, but that long, patient, ecstatic outro (which begins at the 2:32 mark of a song that runs 6:34) is unearthly-good. It's gonna be my new go-to example of "what makes lyrics different from, but potentially every bit as good as, poetry", because it's a matter of TIME: when you're listening to a song, you're under the singer's control, you can't read ahead to the next line (or word) when you want to, you gotta wait for it. There's not a lot of people who've followed Martin through his post-Boos stuff but many of them seem eager to call him a genius, and much as I've been adoring pretty much everything I hear from the Boos, *this* is the song that made me get on board: Martin Carr is a genius.

Michael, Roll Me Slowly Down the Hill (2025) -- those fucking choruses, good god.
