Any L.A.-based ILMers know of fun stuff going on Wednesday night? (Spencer, gygax, Boyer?)

If not, I'll probably end up at, well, this...

(This thread can serve for goings-on in any number of cities.)

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 December 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm gonna be in SF for NYE then going to chicago on 1/5.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, no, sorry; i thought you were around L.A. (from previous geographically specific threads you posted on).

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 December 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'd ask my LA friends what their plans are but they're all coming up here.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 December 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo, Darren, go to ILE and answer the Vancouver BC NYE FAP thread dammit...

Thanks for that link, Bill! Perfect...

Ha, yeah, it IS on a Wednesday - which can always mean good old "Big Kahuna" Karaoke at Del's Saloon in my West L.A. neighborhood.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 December 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i live six blocks from del's--is wednesday the night to go?

dan (dan), Monday, 29 December 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hey that place is close to busby's, which i had the misfortune of being at this last saturday.

whats the scene like at this place anyway?

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 29 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

When we go, occasionally, it's always on Saturday nights - but this past weekend (we stopped by after bowling at Mar Vista Lanes - a real night out), Mr. "Big Kahuna" announced that he's also there Wednesdays. But I bet Saturdays are the better bet.

It's always a pretty good time, if only to have a few beers and watch the assorted regulars (mostly clean-cut, energetic post-UCLA types who all seem to know each other; but also a sprinkling of real old-time oddball neighborhood characters) go through the usual tunes.

So if you enjoy watching yuppie types being agreeably funny as they whoop it up, and then seeing some total Bukowski character stumble up to the mike and do a Frank Sinatra song - and keep in mind, this is probably the most fun to be had within, yeah, five blocks of my apartment - Del's ain't bad.

And then there's this fascinating character named "DJ Ballz"...

Im always a fan of non-serious karaeoki(sp?). its the large groups of highly choreographed gentlemen belting out 'ill make love to u' that I fear. have you ever been to boardwalk 11 in culver city? its in some strip mall but supposedly they have decent karaeoki.. according to the LA weekly, that is.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 29 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard of it... I'll check it out sometime, as I'm always on the lookout for tucked-away West Side diversions. (Like the time we ended up at this place "Club Curves," where someone was having a birthday party - it turned out to be for large women, and the men who love them!)

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly, club curves = defunct

the only interesting west side bar that I'd recommend visiting is the backstage, which is right behind sony studios on culver blvd. cheap drinks, interesting locals, kareoki dj with a penchant for sporting red suits, and the occasional sighting of d level celebrities. oh and you can smoke in it too.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i recommend culver city hotspot "tokyo 77".

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

where's that at?

i live in culver so Im always looking for places that dont require a designated driver to get there..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?ed=xey6z.p_0Trdq.RGQYHKHa5lkeZ0&csz=Culver+City+CA&country=us&resize=s

it's not really a hotspot, it's a japanese coffee shop with a staff older than buddha. get the #4 lunch special.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

also: i'm jealous of you so close to tito's.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, all of these westside L.A. spots are totally new to me... for karaoke, I like to bust the private room thing with a group of friends. There's tons of excellent spots in Koreatown, like "The Palm," where you rent the room for a reasonable hourly rate, and you can smoke in there, and the song selection is nice, and each private room is named, mysteriously, after a fashion designer (I recently belted a few out in the Dolce and Gabana suite, while chugging cheap Soju).

As for the question itself, Sam, I'm not aware of anything happening on New Year's at all... if I hear of something, I will let you kow for sure. I'm really hoping it's not a replay of last year (Boardner's... alone... full blackout on a bus bench on Highland)...

keep me posted, too!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 29 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax and Bill - cool; I will check these places out.

Do you know that bar "The Red Garter" (I think it's in Culver, on Lincoln somewhere). About as divey as they come, but good for that - playing those touchscreen video things and listening to the jukebox. (I remember them having particularly blah bottled-only beer [no draft], though. At least Del's has Guinness in the *can*.)

Ben - you should come to this Athletic Club dance thing! My girlfriend and I will likely end up going to that. In fact, I may buy online advance tix before long here...
